Hi Terry can you post a photo as it is hard to help without knowing what you have. Put the pictures in a album that you have created first and, then you can post them.

If you put up some pictures I'm sure someone will help.

Advice on inserting pictures is here – **LINK**

Have you also looked at lathes.co.uk?

Alternatively, but not to exclude putting up some pics, is to check out the lathesdotcodotuk site. There will be photos of some examples on there.

Yes, pics would be right handy. If you have an M Type Drummond you have a good old machine. Quite a few owners of them on here. As well as lathes.co.uk, a good resource is to join the Yahoo Groups drummondlathes group and have a look through the info in the FILES section etc.

Usually with chucks, you will need to buy the size you want, possibly a 5" (125mm) depending on lathe, and then either machine the old chuck backplate to suit it and bolt the chuck on to the backplate, or you can buy a backplate blank from lathes.co.uk or elsewhere and machine it up yourself, which may be a bit tricky for a beginner as it needs to be accurately screw cut and machined to fit the spindle.

Post some pics of your existing chuck/s and the panel can probably advise further.

Thanks for the swift replies. Have added some photos now. If anyone recognises the make and model would be really helpful,

                    Regards

                      Terry,

Nice lathe, looks very much like a Lorch model A **LINK**

I think your set up would benefit from a countershaft in between the motor and the lathe spindle. The current direct drive probably gives a top speed that is rather fast for the lathe bearings.

                      Rod

Agreed, it's a Lorch, appears to be in very good condition too.

                          Hi Terry,

In case you do not already know. A countershaft is used on most lathes to reduce the spindle speed for cutting metal. Shown here on my 9" dia Southbend.

I doubt you will easily find a chuck that screws straight on to the spindle. Usual procedure is to buy a standard chuck and bolt it to that flanged backing plate that is screwed onto your spindle with the existing chuck. The backing plate will most likely need a spigot machining on it to fit the new chuck. I would focus my attention on getting the countershaft in place and get the lathe up and running and get some practice on it first. It looks like a lovely little machine. Good score!

                                Hi Teery,

It's a Lorch plain turning lathe. I have the same one, I use mine for clock repair amongst other things. As well as a countershaft please dont start it up without adding any oil into the holes on the top of the two towers on the headstock. I have a couple of cups on the top of mine where I pour in oil to lubricate it. It looks like you dont have a backgear system on yours (I dont have one either).

I have lots of attachments for mine, most stuff I have adapted from other lathes to fit it.

I tried to attach some photos but cant quite work out how to do it.

                                Enjoy

                                Steve

Your lathe is about a hundred years or more old.

You can find out a little (not much I'm afraid) more about it here:
