… the real Winnie the pooh preferred condensed milk to honey…

      Neil,

Prepare yourself for a shock. Like Father Christmas, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy, Winnie the Pooh isn't  real. I'm afraid you've confused him with Paddington Bear, the well known Peruvian diplomat…

Of course during the war the Germans made coffee from roasted Acorns which had to be kept in running water for about 14 days to remove the Oxalic acid before processing.

I judder to think what it tasted like.

Actually Winnie the Pooh is very real and can be seen in the New York public library, along with Piglet, Kanga, Eeyore and Tigger. I saw them back in May and took a photograph. Roo is not there, and of course Christopher Robin is not either, he must be getting long in the tooth if he is still around.

I think Eichelkaffee is much older then that – I've seen it mentioned in 19th century stories – and it seems to be being promoted as a caffeine-free health drink now.

But I'm not going to taste it either… cheekylaugh

I moved last year and found tea, Yorkshire Gold, had an oily film on the surface as it brewed. Turned out the water round here is much harder than I was used to so a quick bit of research was needed. Answer has turned out to be a Brita water jug. All tea or coffee water is filtered first and the difference is remarkable. As an aside, it is also noticeable after a shower how dry my skin feels, Vaseline lotion sorting that out. Colin

Re. the hard water, here in Kent we have deep well water from the boreholes in the chalk. Southern water also have authority to draw water from the river medway above maidstone. Not sure if they mix it or if it is pumped one or the other but occasionally while having a shower the soap with lather beautifally, the next day it will not due to hard water.

People who live in hard water areas seem to enjoy less heart problems?

We have relatively hard water here in East Sussex, when we refitted the kitchen I installed a Brita tap which has a separate outlet for filtered water fed by a large Brita cartridge, we use this water for all tea and coffee and find it makes a difference. Noticeably we now do not get scale in our kettle which we used to before the kitchen refit. I change the filter every 6 months, not a cheap exercise but well worth it.

Not a coffee machine as such, but why oh why do new kettles leave an awful taste in the water for at least a couple of months? There isn't much plastic exposed to the water as most are stainless, but I seem to get through kettles very quickly and ALL have this problem. I've looked on the internet for a solution, but even though many find the same problem, I cannot find an answer……..any ideas here?

How things have changed since I used to order a coffee in a milk bar with one sentence.

"I'd like a cup of coffee please"

"Yes Sir – cappuccino, latte or Americano?"

                            "Americano please"

                            "Is that with milk?"

                            "Yes"

                            "Full, semi skimmed or skimmed?"

                            "Full please"

                            "Hot or cold milk Sir?"

                            "Cold please"

"Would you like the new Brazillian blend?"

                            nods

                            "One shot or 2?"

                            "2 please"

"What's your name so I can write it on the cup"

                            "Clive of India"

                            "That'll be £2.80 please"

                            "Card or cash sir?"

                            "Phone"

Frowns, thinking this bloke's too old to be paying by phone

"Do you want a receipt Sir?"

"No thank you. I wonder why there is a queue?"

Get yourself a decent cafe to visit. I can go to mine, say to the young lady behind the bar, "Same as usual please", go find a seat, and within a few minutes I receive a cup of Americano with cold milk on the side. Job done.

Oh, and mine is £2-60 and paid on the way out.

In order to avoid the taste change I used to take back home a bottle of the local London water which I knew to be non- poisonous as it had been allegedly drunk 7 times before. Now after years of the free work coffee machine product No23 even the dishwater at home is better. Must get round to uncapping my well and trying that out; nice radon purified water.

I remembered someone recommending a place and it's dead easy to find….it's next door to the one you've just passed and just before the next one. I asked for a cup of coffee and the girl stared into space and asked if I wanted a Latte; Creamy Latte; velvety flat white; classic Americano; rich Cortado; frothy Cappuccino; Intense Expresso; Corto……….!!

Confused I said I'd have a cup of tea. The girl then asked if I want English Breakfast; Chai; Earl Grey; Chai Tea Latte or herbal…….Don't bother I said, I'll have one at home!

A few chaps have said they can taste chemicals in new kettles and coffee machines, and that it lasts for ages. Not a problem I've noticed.

Maybe it's to do with genes and taste-buds, some unfortunates don't like Marmite or Rakfisk. Though I prefer real coffee, I drink fresh instant with pleasure. Fine wines, whisky, brandy and liqueurs are all wasted on me. I can tell the difference between cheap nasty booze and good quality, but I would never pay more than £10 for a bottle of wine, even yummy Australian!

Could be others are very sensitive to trace chemicals in new plastics that untutored palates miss completely.

I was in Costa yesterday and ordered a cappuccino.

Apparently what I got was a large latte although I thought i had found the legendary lost FA Cup.

(It's only in the last four or so years I've started drinking proper coffee with any regularity, because most tea these days is awful – probably because its been 'brewed' by Australian baristas, eh Danny? )

I can only quote what I have experienced after drinking coffee in many cities around the world. The worst coffee I ever had was in San Diego btw. Melbourne Coffee Culture
