Well impulse buying is dangerous, spent an entire £5 on this lathe off ebay.

Could anyone shine light on the maker of it? It lacks any makers marks. I just thought it would be a neat mini wood lathe if I restored it.

He he what possessed you?😜 I keep looking for a small lathe for 'dinner table working' but that's a bit too far gone. Have fun rebuilding it and I will probably be jealous when it's finished.

              Neil,

I see its ambidexterous and also equiped for taper turning so it upstages the Super Adept on both counts

Could it be an example of the ultra-rare Supra Inept?

Hard to tell without the signature hamster-wheel power unit and the one-speed countershaft though.

Considering what modellers pay for castings …

I reckon that was £5 wery well spent.

Being left handed myself, I loved this the moment I saw your photo. I have to be ambidextrous for my trade, but I am truly left handed. I would have paid more than 5 quid for it that's for sure.

Don't know the identity of your wee lathe, but it looks much older than the Adept, I'd say some where in the 19th century. Perhaps a clock makers lathe?

                        mm,

Ian, surely you mean small, not wee😁 or are your roots showing?

And I am still jealous that he owns it and not me. 😫

Ps I will be in Auckland in January, expecting to visit the local model engineers 😎

Interesting. I'm sure one of the old ME articles on the adepts recounts how the owner made a modest income from turning balance staffs – they must have been more in demand back in the 40s!

So due to postage problems it only just reached me. Must confess my doubts on a watchmakers pedigree.

Tailstock is sloppy and rotates heavily while unscrewed so to assume it is straight at any point is optimistic.

Headstock has no bearings and also no split to allow wear compensation.

Bed has ( mostly had now) paint on it so I imagine it doesn't compare to the hand scraped beds I've heard of for accuracy.

I'm guessing it must be a (incredibly old) wood model makers lathe of sorts.

Still not bad for a fiver tho
