I have a problem with the inside motion on Stephenson operated valve gear. I have noticed that when moving the reverse lever only one of the valve connections is moving (across the valve face) I cant figure this problem out!?

Try rotating the wheels 90deg and carry out the same test.

You were right re the movement of the wheels, but I suppose I should have mentioned that the problem I have is that one "side" of the valve motion is not (fully) opening and closing across the valve ports. This has baffled me! The engine was running, probably because od my over enthusiasm! (running flat out)one of the valve parts (sliding part near cylinder) got "mashed up" but I repaired this, it is the two part rocker that connects to the valve chest. It looked a good repair but this side is the one causing the problem, any help or suggestion very welcome!

The fact the valve events are dis-similar leads me to suggest you should very carefully compare the L&R individual parts against each other and the drawings looking for a discrepancy. Without wishing to be the bearer of bad tidings, assuming the crankpin quartering is OK, it's even possible one of the eccentrics has slipped thus throwing the thing out of beat.

                  Hi David,

You have exhibited on here on a number of issues and occasions a complete failure to understand the workings of locomotive and traction engine valve gears.

Can I respectfully suggest you make a study of this subject. Posing questions with a paucity of information to be able to resolve the problem is not the best way forward.

                  Cheers,

                  Julian

An engineer who was unemployed for a long time decided to open a medical clinic. He puts a sign outside the clinic: "A cure for your ailment guaranteed at $500; we'll pay you $1,000 if we fail." A Doctor thinks this is a good opportunity to earn $1,000 and goes to his clinic. Doctor: "I have lost my sense of taste." Engineer: "Nurse, please bring the medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth." Doctor: "This is Gasoline!" Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your taste back. That will be $500." The Doctor gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days later to recover his money. Doctor: "I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything." Engineer: "Nurse, please bring the medicine from box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth." Doctor: "But that is Gasoline!" Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your memory back. That will be $500." The Doctor leaves angrily and comes back after several days, more determined than ever to make his money back. Doctor: "My eyesight has become weak." Engineer: "Well, I don't have any medicine for this. Take this $1,000," passing the doctor a $500 note. Doctor: "But this is $500…" Engineer: "Congratulations! You've got your vision back! That will be $500."

                      Are you that doctor?
