Last week we discovered that the top slide (a.k.a. compound) on our Myford ML7 had a lot of slack. Today I was able to measure the slack at 0.009 inch. The lion’s share of which came from play at the end plate. I was able to get the slack down to 0.004 inch by tightening the micrometer dial but that’s where it stopped as the screw ran out of threads. I think I may need to replace the #C22 fibre washers (p/n 11257) but can’t find them for sale in the USA.

Can anyone describe these washers? I take it that they are not wool felt but rather some hard fibre? Are they the sort of thing that can be picked up at a well-stocked hardware shop or are they specific to the Myford?

Red fibre washers are a standard hardware store item.

Plain steel washer can also be inserted next to the original fibre washer to take up wear.

You can also nip up one of the topslide gib adjusting screws to lock the slide when no tin use.

0.004 backlash on a feedscrew is pretty good if that’s what you mean by slack.
