I would like to fit a milling attachment to my Toolco 1022GV lathe but am not sure which one to choose. Has anyone fitted a particular model and would recommend it, or knows of one that would fit with minimum disruption?

I'm not expecting to do any heavy duty metal removal but would like something with a reasonable range of gripping size and vertical movement.

Thankful for any advice and suggestions.

The 1022GV is the same as my WM250 and there is a purpose made milling attachment ie this from Warco Toolco are not listing anything at the moment for this. Check that your lathe has the bolt holes on the rear of the bed to take the attachment.

This is basically the WM14 mill without the table. If you have room you may be better of buying the whole mill or something similar, a lot less wobbly!

Rightly or wrongly, I interpreted the OP's query to refer to a vertical slide, again like this from Warco. It would certainly be far cheaper than the milling attachment. For the purpose of light milling, I gather from the experience of others, that it would suffice, so long as the slide will fit the cross slide of the Toolco lathe, which appears to have the 'for-and-aft' tee slots. A sub-table would be an easy project upon which to mount the slide, should the holes not line up.

I should reiterate that I have no experience of these slides. It's just a casual observation.

Three comments:

Warco sell a mounting plate to fix the vertical slide to the lathes cross slide.

The "Myford" style milling slide can be used with some mods to the above mounting plate. This can provide angular adjustment if that's useful.

If considering the "milling attachment" as apposed to the "milling slide", the rear splash guard may not be deep enough to accommodate it. I believe Warco have a suitable replacement splash guard.

For a similar amount of money as the Warco milling attachment you could buy a stand alone lathe. Of course that depends on if you have room for one. The biggest problem with a combi unit is as soon as the mill part is set up you need the lathe function.

Oldpedagog – I bought this from Warco when I got my lathe, and ever since the noble gentry on here put me right on saf(er) workholding I get my small milling jobs done quite easily. Ignore this particular instance (I do better now) as it is what got me all the good advice! You can just see the vertical milling slide, cast angle plate and the baseplate to go with it which fixes to the cross slide. I also got their small vise which mounts on the front of the slide but it won't hold most of my work.

I agree with Oldiron regarding "the biggest problem with a combi unit", or a milling slide for that matter. Yes, milling slides can be made to perform quite satisfactorily within their capacity, but It does get a bit tedious swapping functions. Especially if you've just swapped back, and find one further operation needed to be done.

Bo'sun absolutely right, so annoying and so restrictive for normal turning/facing operations with the slide in the way and the "unexpected" need for swapping has had me cursing many a time, hence my name is now on a list for a mill!

First of all I had a swivelling Vertical Slide. Then because of its limitations bought a Rodney Milling Attachment for the ML7

Disliking the lack of rigidity in the foregoing two, I bought a Mill/Drill (The choice was made for me by the space and headroom available at the time, or would have bought something larger! )

Now with a larger lathe, I have, and VERY occasionally use, the heftiest Vertical Slide that I could find. It needed a slight adaptation to fit to the lathe, but has been invaluable for certain jobs that could not fit under the Mill/Drill.

But am under no illusions that it is stiffer than a proper Mill.
