I have a Meddings dril tru bench pillar drill with 5 speeds via stepped pulleys. Serial number DT1237. Its a superb machine in daily use.

It has a ROHM chuck marked 1/32 – 3/8 B16, so I assume the chuck has a B16 mount and the I believe the spindle is a 2MT.

The chuck is worn and I would like to replace it, I would welcome some advice on how to do this please

          Hi,

There is usually a hole through the centre line of the chuck – insert a suitable length of round steel and give this a sharp tap with a hammer… this should remove the arbor from the chuck body…If it does not replace the chuck and arbor with a new quality arbor and Rohm or Jacobs chuck.

              Thank you thats helpful

I'm wandering how to remove the chuck & arbor from the machine, there isnt a slot where you would insert a conventional drift I suspect it will need a forked drift like a ball joint splitter but this may need a lot of force and I dont want to damage the spindle

Arc Eurotrade have chuck removal wedges (pairs), the 2MT ones are 4 . 85 UK Pounds, in their catalogue no., 8, they have a good range of drill chucks, and arbors, at whs a reasonable price compared to what I see at this end of the planet. Ian S C

                  Hi there

No slot for a drift, no arbor.
Chuck must be fitted direct to taper on the spindle.

Check for a screw inside the chuck just in case before trying to wedge it off.

                  regards David

If in the end you use the pair of forked splitters, apply a strong G clamp to squeeze the forks together, no force or damage on spindle.

I agree with David, I forgot about the possibility of a retaining screw. Ian S C

A certain care is necessary with B16 chuck mount tapers. They come in two varieties, short and long, and are very close dimensionally to the Jacobs 33 taper. So much so that, depending on tolerances, it is possible to get wrong pairs to apparently assemble. Maybe even well enough to drill a few holes. This is most likely with no name or "sounds like a brand" bargain components.

I once had the dubious pleasure of sorting out a chuck and arbour pair where even the makers seemed confused as the measurements on both fell between all three standards. As the taper sides were barrelled rather than straight I eventually concluded that the (unknown) makers had concocted a sort of universal fit which would mate adequately with any provided sufficient pressure or large enough hammer were applied. Alignment afterwards being, most likely, somewhat imperfect.

And if there is a screw inside the chuck – it will probably have a left hand thread (thus speaks the voice of bitter experience).

Why not try asking Meddings how to remove the chuck?.

They still exist. Tel 01752 313323.

I have found them helpful in the past.

I concur! Rang them recently and asked if they still had a quill spring for my Pacera (built in the dark ages…) Parted with a little money, had one almost by return of post.

Meddings were very helpful, they stopped making this machine in 1979 and the chuck is almost certainly original. They suggest using the wedges and a good soak in penetrating fluid.

I now have a pair of wedges and the chuck is soaking in penetrating fluid overnight, so hopefully its going to come off tomorrow!

A piece of cake, its now got a nice new ROHM chuck on that has no run out.

                                    Thanks for all the advice

Another general Meddi ngs topic: can anybody supply me with a table for a Drill Tru which I have just acquired?
