I don't know if it helps, david, but Tony lists several 'badge engineered' versions at **LINK** which might make it easier to find an owner.

            Hi Stub Mandrel

            That makes it worse.

            But easier to explain.

A reader contacted me to say his Manix lathe was wired up with the earth lead not connected.

I was trying to find out if there were any more bad ones before printing a warning in the magazines. A one off is bad but many is a nightmare.

            regards David

If I'm paranoid about one thing, it's making sure my kit is earthed properly.

I would say that the wide range of Badge-Engineered versions makes it essential that you put something in the magazines, David.

On a happier note; Neil's link reminded me about the exquisite little Toyo ML1

… always fancied one of those!

                P.S.

Here is a little information about Manix.

                and here the company website

These things are 50 years old now

If there's a risk then a buyer must accept it

                    Otherwise. Buy new

Is this a new machine as by EU Law it has to be a sealed plug. The web site of this company is not of use as it stated pictures not available. That alone for me would raise alarm bells.
David if this infact is a new machine I will support you on this issue.

One off or not I think it is worth a mention along with a reminder/advice to check electrical connections on all machines in the workshop from time to time.

                            Bob,

I think you will find that it's only the "thumbnails" on the index page that are not available

… the links work, and there are datasheets.

There appears to be a new web-site under develoment.

David … to avoid the speculation … do you know to which Model the original comment relates ?

                                Hi There

                                It was an opriginal Manix.

However, I don't know if it was a one off.

Hence the attempt to find out.

                                regards David

                                  Hi There

An old machine but purchased new and not been played with.

                                  regards David

On a similar theme, I know of a mini-lathe from the "Real Bull" factory which arrived with its fuse in the neutral line, so it wouldn't blow if there were a short from live to the metalwork of the machine. I don't know if this was a one-off.

Of course, with the fused mains plugs we use in the UK, there is a second line of defence.
