I been looking at buying a new bench drill chester or warco around £340 price.

Not sure if maybe best looking for a quality second hand one I mainly drill stainless steel and my cheap £70 wolf drill struggles and stalls a lot

I've got a 16 speed Clarke CDP302B from Machine Mart. Aside from needing plenty of headroom it's really rather good and doesn't have any quill wobble.

I generally use it with a smaller chuck than the big one supplied with it, but swapping is a two-minute jonb with an MT2 quill.

Are you anywhere near Wiltshire, you could save a serious amount of money if you have the time.

Like Neil,I also have a 16 speed Taiwan pillar drill 5/8" chuck, some 34 years old at this stage, and still going strong.

Despite being in almost daily use, some heavy,it has never given any trouble, and can handle 1" drills with no bother.

So I dont think you can go too far wrong even if you go for the bench model. At the time,I paid 300 Irish [I dont think there was much difference Irish/English at the time ] You might buy even cheaper now

I consider it to be one of the best machines I ever bought [and much better than some ! ]

                Go for it.

I'm looking for a new bench drill but a much smaller one suitable for indoor use. To be purely for small drills up to 3.5 mm. in a range of materials, balsa, plywood, M.S. brass, bronze etc. No heavy drilling the boxford union in the workshop does all that.

There are numerous cheapy, cheapy, chinese ones around the £100 mark and all available via delivery from the far east. Not sure about these, look like glorified dremels to me?

The proxxon TBH looks good but at a whopping £365 I would want some really good feedback and a up close look before i would buy at that price.

The axminster XO at £312 also expensive but I do like the variable speed drive, digital readout and the scroll chuck.

Arc euro are offering a sieg XO at £224 which looks very similar in spec and quality to the Axminster and has a ER11 collet chuck option .

Any thoughts on or experience of the above guys? cheers geoff

For a small precision drilling machine the SEIG X0 is good, and can be properly upgraded to a 'micro mill' with an XY table (It is built as a mill so not the usual drill as mill bodge).

As I understand it the Arc and Axminster machines are the same but Axminster offer a 3 year guarantee. It is essential to use the locking screw when using an ER11 chuck as it is taper fit.
