        David,

A friend of mine had a roller door fitted to his single garage last year for I'm fairly certain £900 all from a company in Milton Keynes. It cost me £600 for a good make new up and over with four corner locks and mechanism earlier this year.

Converted mine to side hinged and insulated with 2" EPS, then 'added' a side door, and never looked back.

Took a week of figuring out and helped by neighbour on the day.

I was lucky as there is a Carport in front, so protected from the elements.

Details here but the Album I referred to has either gone AWOL or I forgot to add it.

I did the same on the Carport extension, converting the bare bones 'Up and Over' to hinged as well, but there was space for a standard door on the side.

Had to wait nearly a month for the right conditions of no rain and wind to get it bolted up, as it acted just like a flipping sail in the slightest breeze.

Geoff – I just happen to live in the windiest part of town.

This weekend I finished putting Celotex onto the back of my garage door. As much as I'd like the roller door I can't justify the cost, especially as my garage door is almost new anyway. To put the cost into perspective I could upgrade my lathe for less money!

I'll report back at the end of winter to let you know how well it worked.

David (and Jason if he sees this),

How did you fix the Celotex to the door, please?

              Regards Tom

I used a wood saw to cut it to size (very easy to do), and then glued it on with expanding foam.

The cheapest source of Celotex was a local builders merchant – I cut into sections when I bought it so I could get it my car without having to pay for delivery

Problem with an up and over it don't matter what you do to insulate, the cold will get through the gaps and will need extra measures.

Cheapest way out polythene across the lot taped to the wood surround about £2. Does better overall job than just insulating the door which in reality only stops the cold coming through, not the gap surrounding.

Having used part celotex for some years you wont notice any advantage then cheap radiator reflector on a roll glued to the door about £7. In fact its thin and doesn't protrude like celotex past door line for those of us that have built in arrangement. **LINK**

Combine rad reflector with cheap ribbed 1/8" matting for £37, you will be going in for a warm.

Looked at insulated motorised rollers about 10 yrs ago and last year, prices have dropped from £850 to £1200. Contacted a local company and couldn't be bothered to travel 15 mile, so ended up with replacement up and over £75 new delivered, got to know the right people.

One thing to consider is that draughts equal ventilation and a nice snug workshop would be far too full of carcinogens in the air! Much better to dress up in warm clothing and keep the machines dressed up in film of oil and plastic cover.
