      Hello All

just wondering if anybody has swapped out their up and over garage door for an insulated roller door, and if so did you find it made much of a difference to keeping the garage warm in the winter ?

I just fitted 25mm Celotex between the frame members of my Up & over. Makes a lot of difference.

I filled in the back of my up & over door with 2" insulation foam bonded in place with building foam, all gaps, voids & corners then filled with building foam and trimmed flush. Brush draught strip sides & bottom with rubber draught strip at the top.

The garage now requires just a small fan heater on thermostatic setting for comfortable working on very cold days, the door is much stiffer, noise reduction was an unexpected bonus, you used to be able to hear my radio 25 yards away at the top of the drive, now you can't hear it with your ear against the garage door.

I did the same. Makes the workshop much cooler during our hot summers!

We did just that – changed to an electric roller door. It made a huge difference. No draughts, less noise and a little bit of heat from a fan fire makes it much nicer to use. Ours faces south and I'm also pretty sure it helps it stop being like an oven in the summer. Downside was the cost. SteveW

I replaced an up and over with a 20mm insulated electric roller door about 18 months ago, never looked back. No draughts and insulation is good.

Changed ours to 40mm insulated sectional door, mainly because we were suffering a bit with cold cloakroom and hall which only had a single thickness brick wall between them and the garage. There was enough width in the garage to insulate the wall. The difference in the winter is quite noticeable, both in the house and in the garage which now holds some heat from the house. The door seals well both onto the face seal and the seal to the floor. Only downside is the headroom where the door slides into garage, but very similar to up and overs.

Same as Graeme W. Just brilliant – and cooler in summer too.

I fitted my new garage/workshop with an insulated roller door and it is a lot better than the old up and over type as it certainly keeps the draughts out. I do not think the colour choice was that good, it is dark blue and the inside surface gets quite warm when the sun is on it and is cold in the winter as the heat is conducted from one side to the other by the aluminium. Fortunately the sun is only on the door for a brief period first thing in the morning and is probably better than a single glazed window in the winter. Whole electric door 3 meters wide was sub £1k.

I had an electric insulated roller shutter door fitted in March this year. I have found both plus and minus points. The door is insulated and certainly keeps the garage/workshop warmer in cool weather. However, the door is black (to match the rest of the house) and soaks up the heat in summer and makes the garage quite warm. Too warm sometimes as the sun is directly on the door in the afternoon. The door keeps the neighbours happy as the sound insulation is really good and a minor plus is that it doesn't intrude into the garage when open. I had to close the old up and over door to open the wall cupboards I had which was a bit of a pain.

All in all, a good investment and was slightly over £1,000 fitted and the old door taken away.

Did the same as Jason B. 1" Celotex fits neatly into the door frame

Just as important is a seal along the bottom of the door. Like this sort of thing – **LINK** keeps the mice out as well.

My garage door was brown and it faced the Sun and got hot in the garage. So what i did I painted the outer surface with a very light green colour and it does not get so hot now.Dark colours absorb heat!

I can remember checking the temperature of cars as a point argument at a show and the coolest was one in pearlescent white not very scientific as it was just done with the hand.

                                  JasonB,

Your door looks similar to the new one I've just had fitted, opened the old door one morning and it fell off, the diagonal pieces you have taped over are they strengtheners or individual locks in each corner of the door.

Hi – A question to Alastair and Bob – I'm looking for an insulated electric roller door – can you recommend a specific make and installer?

I did a good trawl round and had three quotes from local companies all the local companies were in excess of £2500.00 fitted. So I took the view that the door is not exactly complicated to fit so went for supply only from these people **LINK** . Cost came in at £988.00 (it is 3 meters wide) and was delivered to their Southampton Depot in a reasonable time scale as I had the additional problem of living on an Island so had to get my local delivery company to collect from Southampton. Not new to this delivery issue and have ways round it. I fitted the two runners and got my mate to give me a hand to lift the roller into place, doddle of a job. Overall happy with the job and total cost including beer tokens was under half any local quote all be it they were supply and fit but I could not see the justification of £1000.00 + for 2 muppets for 1/2 a day.

Installed electric roller doors (20mm insulated panels ) a couple of years ago & installed 25 mm insulation panels onto back of panels plus panel fitted to entry door, much warmer & quieter in winter, cooler in summer, only need to take the initial chill off in winter with 2 small oil filled rads switched on for about an hour…

Roller doors are not sectional doors

I fitted 40mm sectional electric doors aftre the old henderson fell to pieces. I got condensation on the outside of the panels to within 1 inch of both the joins and edges this winter and 10deg inside from house leakage.

You can get insulated roller shutter doors – they need loads of headroom for the roll and given each panel is only 2inches wide you have lots of gaskets to leak instead of 4 and lots of noise to operate.

One thing to consider is if this is the only access to the garage you need a lockable manual release in case of power cuts or or blown fuses. Else you'll be removing roof tiles to break in. Very few suppliers seem to bother with this.

Mine has a yale type key for manual that does not look like a handle.

i fitted mine during a full day with only a bit of help from the lad to lift the panels

                                                Dave,

Roller doors need between 210mm and 350mm above the door depending on the height, higher = larger roll, each section can be 77mm wide, not noisy or at least mine isn't and most have an option for manual internal or external opening.

Well, I’ve had a quote for a roller garage door and it’s coming in at a hefty £1700. I think this seems about correct for the Harmon roller garage door but this is still a rather big number. I could try and fit a door myself to save some money, but I don’t think that would work out too well so that’s not really an option.

As the primary reason for this is to keep the garage warm I can’t help but think I can buy an awful lot of electricity for £1700. JasonB’s idea of Celotex is as at the moment looking the more attractive option.

I fitted the door myself and was not difficult, it took a spirit level to get the runners up right, a hammer drill ideally SDS, screw driver, hammer, pencil. Took a second pair of hands to slot the roll into the runners not heavy just the length (3 meters). If your current door is in good condition then insulating it is probably the route to take but if it is getting towards it's best before date and will need replacing in the to too distant future may be it's time to consider the change.
