I have an EMCO rotary table and in place of the associated dividing attachment which did not come with the table I am endeavouring to fit a handwheel a shown in the photos. . Problem is that I am not sure how to do this as adjustment of the worm wheel drive mechansim appears to be very sensitive, ranging from the Locked solid – thru some travel with a lot of backlash – to no drive at all. Can anyone please advise me on exactly how to go about this operation.

It looks like the worm is on an eccentric?
If so it’s similar to my vertex rotary table.

I adjust for smooth travel with a little backlash and then only wind in one direction. That way the backlash doesn’t matter especially.

Yes, the worm drive is on an eccentric and clamped in place by a socket headed screw. Handle held in place by a grub screw engaging with a flat on the drive spindle

              In the photograph above.

In the hold down slot which is supporting the Sector Arms is the head of a slotted grubscrew. This grubscrew limits the rotation of the eccentric. This is used to adjust the depth of engagement of the worm. Once set, it will last for years. It also allows the worm to be swung out of the way when the table is used for direct indexing.

It also retains the eccentric bush endwise. If you can pull the worm assembly out when the M6 capscrew is released then the grubscrew is not there.

              Regards

              Gray,

Hi guys – Success!. Many thanks for your help. I now have a smoothly working hand-wheel and a better understanding as to how the table works.
