                Ruin Xmas? How?

TV no good – not worth watching and certainly not worth the exorbitant licence fee

Just me and moggs, no woman to order me about – not hormone driven anymore, ha, ha! So spend as long as I like in workshop. "Perfick"

I have to agree with this, raising the cost of cheap goods that have a very low life span can only be good for the environment.

It does beg the question, if the Chinese economy did actually replace the USA as the world's leading economy, will they finally loose the 'developing nation' status that allows the cheap shipping of goods?

They'll be dictating their own terms of business by then.

An interesting set of comments, so far … especially considering that these pages contain so much enthusiasm for products that originate from China.

We're seduced by functional products at cheaper prices as are western businesses. Even if made in the west it's likely from Chinese steel, Chinese electronic components etc to the point that it's made in China but assembled elsewhere.
Short-sighted and will bite us all. You can bet that as soon as the totalitarian regime is stable in Afghanistan, the Chinese will be across their border offering infrastructure – likely a nice railway line to get the gold and copper deposits out and up the heroin trade to the west..

Just another 'problem' which will be worked out one way or another. As I get older I try not to worry about things I can't control but I don't always succeedsmiley

Made me think of a much more important problem. When the oil runs out how will we lubricate out treadle lathes? Won't be able to fall back on the traditional lard as the Greenies will have banned animals. Is palm oil any good? Maybe I can grow enough sunflowers to meet my needs.

Rapeseed is probably more practical UK crop or just go Soylent Green for your lard…It’s got green in the name so who could complain?

My last major purchase was two laptop computers. Deliberately I avoided Lenovo because I discovered it had Chinese ownership or something. Eventually I bought Dynabook, made by Sharp, I think. Now Sharp took over, biught out, dunno, the Toshiba laptop business so when I saw they were badging them as Satellite Pro, I thought good, they may be Japanese.

When they arrived, they had a sticker on the bottom – Made in China!

Seems like they are already here!

Hi, however it is all about bulk. Imagine if a Chinese company could ship 1 million items of tut / junk in one container and make a viable profit of 1 pence per item even after calculated losses, that's £10,000 profit on one container, and no doubt they would ship several containers each time. It is alleged that the dearest part of the transport cost for containers received into the UK, mile for mile, is here in the UK and of course China doesn't have to pay for that.

                                          Regards Nick.

China doesn't necessarily need to make a profit. International trade is also about damaging a competitor's economy, gaining stronger currencies and negotiating our tit for their tat.
