Holbrook Model C-10 lathe

I am in the process of buying a Holbrook Model C-10 lathe, from the serial number I can see that it is a 1964 build, the final year of manufacture, it’s the high-speed 3000rpm model.
Does anyone have any experience with these machines, any known issues/problems, etc??

From what I can find on-line they seem to have a good reputation, one description being ‘the thinking man’s DSG’ ….

Looking on the Lathes UK website, the Holbrook has an impressive number of features and toolroom quality. You can only assess the visible wear and allow for the likelyhood of having to make any parts yourself as spares are unlikely to be easy to get.

Up to the mid 60’s Holbrook’s were superb toolroom lathes, if it’s in reasonable condition I wouldn’t hesitate especially if it has any extras like taper turning attachment etc.

But, as Old Mart has said above any spares are likely to be hard to come by so if you can see it running check it out through all the speed and feed ranges and if possible turn something and check for parallel etc.

I worked on a slightly later model about 55 years ago that had a Kop Variator for speed control, nice lathe but very unreliable, so keep away from one of those. Although these days that could probably be substituted with a VFD.
