Help, the most daft ML7 question

I am a complete beginner. I inherited an ML7-R and am working out how to use it. I'm going to give screw cutting a try, read all the books and am ready to go. I want to cut a metric 0.75 mm thread, so looked up the gear set up in the chart. 45 driver, 40/35, 50/21, 70. No problem, but when I assemble it all together the gears don't mesh. I can't get the 1st stud to come down to mesh with the 2nd stud.

Can anybody help?

Peter W If I rememberr rightly there is a pinch bolt on the banjo slacken that and the banjo will revolve around the lead screw boss then you can slacken the studs Messh the gears swing the banjo up to mesh with the gear under the cluster tighten the pinch bolt on the banjo Try turning everything by hand If all is well carry on

Hi Peter,

Have you adjusted the banjo? There should be a stud through a short slot at the bottom. Loosen the nut and you can rotate the banjo around the lead screw. First set up the gears on the banjo in mesh, then rotate the banjo so that the first driven gear engages with the first driver. Then tighten the banjo.

Hallelujah! Thanks chaps! I spent a whole evening trying to work this out. I looked to see if those arms which the studs clamp to were movable, but they looked fixed. I didn't notice that the whole assembly, the banjo, could pivot on the lead screw boss. I didn't find the banjo mentioned in the Myford manual.

Right, back to the project and my continuing education….
