Help needed in identifying inserts

The majority of my lathe tools are HSS so I don't have much experience with inserts.

I do have two inserts which are in the photo below, mostly used on aluminium. As can be seen, they are damaged and I would like to replace them. The only problem is I can't identify them from among all the illustrations on the web.

I would be grateful if somebody could identify them and also confirm that they are suitable for turning aluminium and free cutting steel.

SUMITOMO (maybe) TPGT 0802 or 0902 or 1103 depending on the unchipped length and thickness

I would venture to suggest that they are TNMG inserts. Possibly TCMG110404. You are best placed to measure the thickness and estimate or measure the rake and corner radius and apply the results to the following table:

Edit:  I see I've been beaten to it – with a different result!  I use polished inserts for aluminium and "Standard" ones for steel.

I have not seen the like of these either. However they look to have similar dimensions to the TCMT1102nn series of inserts. If it would help I could send you a sample insert that is designed for aluminium, tip definition – Aluminum Carbide Insert TCGT110204-AK–, to see if it would fit the insert bit bar that you have. While these inserts are designed for aluminium they will work on free cutting steels provided that one isn't too enthusiastic with the depth of cut or feed rate.

A = TBGT L and B = TBGT R as the chipbreaker is only on one side of each corner they are handed inserts, the B in the code may differ as can't see the angle from the photos.

Having said that if you just wanthem for aluminium then the common TCGT 110204 would be fine for general use.

Having looked at the prices for some of these inserts and the fact I have enough HSS to outlast me, I think I'll continue to use HSS tools.

As far as I can tell from the pictures and assuming they are single sided with sloping, not square edges, they are likely to be TCMT 09 for steel, and TCGT 09 for aluminium/ finishing stainless and steel. There doesn't seem to be an 08 size and the next one down may be 06 which is much too small. The size is the inscribed circle diameter which will fit in the triangle. These left and right handed inserts are rare nowerdays, you will be unlikely to get any. For most applications, the symetrical type which is common today is better anyway. Prices vary from silly overpriced big brands to the affordable Chinese ones which are very good.
