<p style=”text-align: center;”>I’m hoping someone may help me in the right direction . My dad passed away earlier in the year and he has left workshops full of tools . He has a lathe and a milning machine and I’m struggling to find somewhere to sell these items. Any help and guidance would be very much appreciated thank you . Fiona</p>

Hi Fiona, you can place them in the classifieds on this forum, there’s a link at the top of this page in the pale blue band, and it’s free fur forum members. ebay is another potion.

        Regards Nick.

If you use eBay make sure you make the starting price the lowest price you are prepared to accept and make it very clear that the items are for collection only. Also, when the items are collected that you get the confirmation number from the buyer and send it to eBay whilst they are present collecting the item, otherwise they could deny that they have collected it and you won’t get paid.

In my experience with eBay you should not set the lowest price as what you are prepared to accept. You want to get the bidding started so getting people interested is key.  I see so many items where the initial price is too high and seems to attract no interest. Then resist the chancers who message you to say that they’ll take it off your hands if you cancel the auction. I sold a caravan one with a starting price of £100.  Bids slowly crept up through the week and in the last minute or so leapt up and it sold for 1500! Chris’ other advice is very sound.

It works both ways, John. I was very disappointed with the price I got when I sold a Boxford CNC in excellent working condition, because I set a low starting price and it only attracted one bidder. I honoured the sale but ever since I have always set the starting price at the minimum I would accept. I have just today sold a Raglan vertical mill which had only attracted one bidder but at least I got what I wanted for it. Of course, with the excitement of the sale I completely forgot to get the collection reference number from the buyer so I am just hoping that the positive feedback he has given me will release the money to PayPal.

Similar to one I have, it’s a Boxford bench Model C, some bits missing (gear cover, for one), T-slotted cross-slide is a plus, with stand. I’d say £450 to £500, but a lot depends on condition and any extra tooling that might come with it.

Hi, definitely looks like a model C, and I think Rob’s price estimate is about right.

If your father had a ‘workshop full of tools’, a lathe and a mill, then most likely there’s a lot that might be of fairly high value. And unless your already knowledgeable, it could be all too easy for someone to take advantage of that. In general, including most of the chucks, drill chucks, any fixed or traveling steadies will raise the lathe price by quite a bit, to even significantly more depending on what’s there. Additional tooling such as any cutting tools should not be included. Used cutting tools usually don’t fetch much, but again we don’t know how much and what you have.

A mill with a digital readout would increase the price, again it all depends if you have one and in some cases if it’s a known industrial model. Selling a mill with a single vise would be considered usual. But depending on all the accessory tooling you also might have, that could be worth a significant amount of money. Again, those and any cutting tools would all be additional to the mills price. I would be very careful and post pictures of all of what you have here before making any decisions about what to or not to include, and the asking price for what could be some expensive tooling and accessories.

Thank you for this advice . Would it be worth trying to find someone to come out and maybe value all of my dad’s things ?

                          Fiona,

If you have a local Model Engineering Society (MES) contact their committee and ask for their assistance – they are usually very willing to help families in these circumstances – and indeed may have members who could be potential buyers.

                          Just  thought…

                          Regards,

That or just posting clear pictures here with any known brand names, sizes etc will work just as well. Hobbyist’s will have a decent idea for average values and it wouldn’t cost you anything other than a bit of time.
