      HI all,

I want to strip my norton gearbox thats fitted to a Harrison L5a lathe. I have the gearbox off the lathe & partially stripped, but am unable to work out how to remove 2 of the shafts & corresponding gears.

Can anyone help with advise or know where i can find info in a manual or publication??

      Any help greatly received..!!

      Many thanks

      Roger

          p1010275.jpgHi Roger

a fellow L5 owner here , i have taken a couple of photos out of my owners manual of the norton gearbox assy and spare parts list , hope you can make out the detail , i think some taper pins may be involved in retaining things but i havnt had to go this deep into my lathes workings yet so dont know for sure, my lathe is 1963 vintage so this handbook will be for machines of that era presumably.

Can anybody point me in the right direction for spare parts for the Harrison L5a lathe particularly bronze bushes for the Norton gearbox.

I will stick my neck out and assume the bronze bushes will be standard bought in items ? If so available from a bearing supplier, I tend to use Simply Bearings. Other suppliers are available.

you were right Chris, the bronze bushes were standard imperial sizes & easy to obtain. But will require drilling for the oil ways

                        The `reverse shaft`(L5-2-179) & `The bearing`(L5-2-116) are both badly worn & require replacing.

Can anybody point me in the direction of a spares supplier…??

                        Many Thanks.

Can the reverse shaft be ground to clean up and a bush turned to suit ? Most case hardened shafts have around thirty thou of "case" If you think it is soft after grinding get it tuftrided ?
