      HI Guys,

Been a while since posting, new house purchased and new workshop being built has kept me quiet.

I've just bought a Harrison 140 and was wandering if anyone had any recommendations on gearbox and slideway oils?

It's got the 1.5hp 3 phase motor on it, has anyone put a twin speed 1.5/3hp motor on one at all to get the higher spindle speeds?

      TIA

      Chris

          .

I now use this machine oil in my headstock. **LINK**

Makers of the machine will specify what weight is best for your machine. Some people use hydraulic oil.

The recommended oil for Colchester Bantam gearboxes AND slideways was Telus 27 which is basically an hydraulic oil. The modern equivalent is an ISO 32 hydraulic oil – you can buy these at most motor factors in 5 litre quantities for under a tenner. No need to mess with exotic gearbox oils or to substitute engine oils at these prices. It doesn't stink and doesn't contain lots of unnecessary additives.

As some on here will know im a "Castrol " fan Both me lathes [Warco and DSG ] and both me mills [ Chester Lux and K & T ] are all filled with Castrol Alpha gearbox oil and the slide ways Castrol Magnaglide 32 for horizontal ways and 68 for vertical ways. Muzzer mentioned Hydraulic oil , Lots of members of the forum use Hydraulic oil with no problems. It does the job fine. [ and is certainly a whole lot cheaper ]. so go for it.

              cheers

ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) was popular for use in gearboxes on the older Harrisons.

Cheers for the oil suggestions, will have a look at all suggested.

                  Thanks again.

got some oil from the attached link, the tellus 33 as reccomended in the manual has a direct comparison on the page.

Thanks again for the tips above, really did help me picking the right oil.

Getting on with the lathe now, got a new motor and inverter fitted and running on it and made my first few pieces.

Now I'm back on the wants hunt and that's for a carriage bed stop, does anyone have a l5a or a 140 one they want to sell or they could take some pictures of and a couple of dimensions for me?

Have a look at 'Doubleboost' web site , he has a 140 & I believe has a bed stop fitted.

                            Hi Tony and George,

On the motor from I got a higher speed one from transwave that also works with a VFD, all seems to work well and the motor mountings on the lathe made the fitting of it relatively simple.

With the bed stop I found one on that online auction site a couple of months ago, probably paid over the odds for it but they seem to be as rare as rocking horse do do.

                            Cheers

                                Hi Tony,

Couldn’t get round the back for a picture of the motor, it was recommended after talking with the people at transwave. I plan to eventually rewire the machines controls so I can get rid of the pendant. All the wiring is just connecting the VFD, motor, pendant and the mains, so simple even I managed it.

Two pictures showing the VFD and pendant.

                                Hope these are of help.

Thanks for this Chris, do you still need a Rotary Converter for this? (I have just bought one from Transwave)

No, the vfd converts it to 240v, a rotary converter would have allowed the lathe to run as it was but to get the higher speed, to get the higher speed I would of needed to buy a new motor in both cases, the vfd route and motor was half the cost of the rotary converter without even thinking of the cost for a two speed motor.

                                    Cheers

May I suggest you fit some support clips to those cables leaving the VFD, removes the strain from the terminations.

Apart from no cable restraint, not even ‘legal’ – as the conductors are only covered with a single layer of insulation.

                                        Potentially a dangerous installation.

The rotating chuck could also be a risk.

                                            Hi Chris

May I suggest you fit some support clips to those cables leaving the VFD, removes the strain from the terminations.

Hi Emgee, they were supported before I moved the lathe 3 weeks ago to fit the new Bridgeport in, thanks for the reminder, will get the supports back in place this week, to many jobs not enough brain power etc..

Apart from no cable restraint, not even ‘legal’ – as the conductors are only covered with a single layer of insulation.

well I'm not too bothered about legality in my home workshop but I do like to try and do things to best practise, the tails on the incoming 240v are as short as they can be to flex enough into the terminals and through the plastic guides on the VFD , I did try fitting heat shrink over them but that didn't work, what would be your suggestion 'not done it yet'?

                                            thanks in advance

                                              Hi Chris,

                                              Congratulations n the new workshop.

If you can find the article "How will you ever move that lot", published in ME about 7 years ago, you will find that part of it describes the installation of a VFD into a Harrison 11 inch, an earlier version of the 140.

I hope it makes interesting reading, as well as being of some use.

Thanks Brian, will look it up this week on the archive, I wanted to fit it inside the electrical cabinet on the lathe but I didn't think the amount of dust in it would help the VFD at all.

                                                cheers
