grayson help

hello im new to all this i have been in the motor trade for 25 yrs and a master tech for the last 12 yrs but metal turning is a new thing to me .

i love building race motorikes and race quads and no welding phazes me so i though i would buy a lathe and give that ago new chalenge, so i got myself a grayson 3 1/2" lathe and thought let give it ago but for the life of me i cant work out how to get the change wheels to stay engaged

now forgive me for the wrong termanoligy and spelling but on the end of the lead screw ther is a slide i belive its called a banjo, anyway this has gears on that when lifted they engauge with the main shaft and will opperate the lead screw but when i let go it just drops,

i cant see any locating pins or locking bolts to secure it there any ideas

Most banjos have a clamping screw to tighten them around a boss that the lead screw runs in

Thank you for the quick rreplying thought that but no pinch bolt and I only have one slot for the gears

Hi gb, a close up photo may help, but I'm guessing it could be a similar arrangement like the one in Paul's post in this **LINK**

Maybe Paul could enlighten you.

Here are some slightly better pics:

The banjo is a similar shape to a Myford ML7, mine appears to be made from a solid chunk of brass and may not be original.

i'd reckon there is supposed to be a set screw to lock the banjo to the boss it fits over.

My guess is that the banjo is fixed to the boss that it is next to on its right. On my lathe there are two hex headed screws through the banjo (in curved slots) into the back of the boss (away from tailstock). As clear as mud?

could you take an end-on shot with the change wheels removed? Wherever the locking arrangement is, it needs to be accesible with the wheels on.

I can only remove the upper change wheel as moving jobs and Allen key locked in toolbox but there is nothing I can see around the banjo so I may have to cut it and weld a locking nut on
