My homemade database gives MEW139, page 31, dated Jun 2008.

          My notes say:

The author came actoss Tubal Cain's Gibralter toolpost and decided to make his own from mild steel (instead of cast iron or buying) and included a modification for quick change tool holders.

Is this the one you want?

This is actually for a vertical slide, but I made a very similar block, fitted with an M10 stud, for my Mini Lathe as an alternative to the top slide for 'Gibraltar' performance with the standard tool holder.

Construction of a Hemmingway kit was published in Model Engineer No. 3618, Volume 145, in 1979.

Thanks for all the responses. Have read the article in 139, useful detail. Will also have a look at the Hemmingway toolpost. Do not often read M.E so it was'nt there that I saw the article. Regards Lynne

I've just found this rather nice variation on the theme, which might inspire: **LINK**

Michael, thanks for the link. interesting, but not quite what I had in mind for the '7'. I like the Aloris toolpost.

I have a question related to the subject in this thread so I'll ask here rather than starting a new thread. (If not appropriate let me know and I'll open a new thread)

I would like to replace my compound slide with a solid tool post on my WM280. I've seen lots of videos and plans on youtube – every one I saw use cast iron for the base. I would not know where to get hold of a piece of cast iron from my location, so I was wondering if black mild steel would do instead?

Malta has not always been an ME desert; David Urwick of Metal Master fame lived there some years ago.

Hi ega, unfortunately I'm not much aware of the local ME status on the island, however you got me curious and after a quick check it seems ME is still alive and kicking. From what I've seen of their FB page it's more inclined to scale models of ships and aircraft, but there are also some steam engines as well. **LINK**

As for cast iron, I believe there are a couple of foundries on the island, but as far as I know they do commissioned work such as lamp posts, bollards and other street furniture. So not sure they'll sell raw material as such.

I have a Long Bed Super 7 and can take deep, accurate cuts on 30mm OD 304 stainless steel without need for a special tool post.
This leads me to think that the short bed Myford 7 lathes have a level of bed flexibility that require solutions not required for the Long Bed.

The long bed Myford ML7's do have a much heavier bed casting than the short bed ones. They also use the Super 7 style cross slide and top slide, which are an improvement on the earlier ones.
