      I am trying to slow an electric motor by gearing I have an 18 tooth driving off the motor I have a 45 tooth and a 24 tooth what needs to drive what

          Going from lo to high will give a slower final speed….Assuming you want the output shaft to turn in the sane direction as the motor, then, 18 on the motor driving 24 as an idler then 45 on the output…

            Forget the 24T unless you can fit that to the motor and have either drive the 45T.

            With just 3 gears one will always be an idler and not do anything

                A simple idler merely reverses direction so driver and driven rotate in same direction.
