Saved a quantity of 20mm galvanised steel bar from the skip at work ,it was off an old handrail so me being me took it home . Any ideas how the galvanizing will machine in the lathe. I know I should just go and try it but I’m bored at work today so I thought I’d ask 😉.

It's just zinc so machines right off without dramas.

If you want to weld it, grind the zinc off first. The fumes are toxic when welding zinc plated stuff.

Yeh it’s not nice to weld even after grinding .

It machines alright, but is not always very round. As regards welding it, no it,s not nice !

You soon find out if you are welding galvanised steel as you can taste the zinc fumes. I was told to drink a glass of milk when that happened (only the one time), as the calcium helps counteract the zinc absorption. Preferably don't do it!

Most of my welding was done outdoors so fumes would usually blow away.

I won’t be using the material for welding projects ,it’s just handy size to have.

Sorry. Meant to add, I have turned galvanised with no problem, but the swarf can be a little dusty if it is old and weathered.

may be a poor quality steel as it didn't require much when in service as a handrail. You might find it hard to get a good surface finish.

To remove zinc, soak overnight in a saturated solution of malt vinegar and table salt. This will dissolve the zinc and works well on nuts and bolts!

Thanks for that tip. Could be handy for using hardware store bolts etc on old motorbikes without them standing out like dog's ears.

The galvanised nuts with the zinc removed will be a very sloppy fit on a standard bolt.
