In 2013 Flickr gave users up to 1TB of free storage. A few days ago they announced from January the 1st if you have a free account any images in excess of 1,000 will be deleted.

      http://www.firstpost.com/tech/news-analysis/flickr-reduces-storage-limit-to-1000-photos-for-free-accounts-to-delete-all-excess-5497491.html

Not sure how many forum members will be affected by this, because Flickr already restrict 'public' images to 200 per user but one person i know with 5,000 family images on the platform is not happy.

Strangely [because I don't recall ever opening a Flickr account]; I received an eMail today about changes to my Terms & Conditions … It basically summarised this: **LINK**

          https://www.flickr.com/lookingahead/?utm_campaign=flickr-lookingahead&utm_source=Flickr&utm_medium=email

          MichaelG.

          .

          P.S.

A previous eMail, in April, informed me about the acquistion of Flickr by SmugMug:

We’re excited to announce that Flickr has agreed to be acquired by SmugMug, the photography platform dedicated to visual storytellers.

SmugMug has a long history of empowering people who love photography and who want to improve their craft, making them a perfect fit for Flickr and our creative community. With SmugMug, we’ll continue to focus on you, the Flickr members who inspire us all with your work.

Nothing will change immediately with regard to your Flickr account. You will still access Flickr with your current login credentials and you will have the same Flickr experience as you do now. We will continue to work to make your Flickr experience even better.

We think you are going to love Flickr under SmugMug ownership, but you can choose to not have your Flickr account and data transferred to SmugMug until May 25, 2018. If you want to keep your Flickr account and data from being transferred, you must go to your Flickr account to download the photos and videos you want to keep, then delete your account from your Account Settings by May 25, 2018.

If you do not delete your account by May 25, 2018, your Flickr account and data will transfer to SmugMug and will be governed by SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy.

Read more detailed FAQs about this transition on the Flickr Blog.

We’re happy that Flickr is your home for photography and we look forward to the next chapter in our adventure together as we join the SmugMug family.

          Thanks,
          The Flickr Team

Interesting. I can understand the rationale. They don't say so, but presumably they feel that proportion of the 3% of free users wit over 1000 images are using it as commercial photo storage.

Always been the big problem with the netty

Sometimes millions of hours of dedicated useful human labour gets trashed

Yahoo for example was a total disaster

It's why I only do three places now and never rely too much on it for storing the important stuff

If this place ever goes t*ts up on us my footprint on the net after 20 years, and thousands of hours, will be reduced to virtually zero

                Hi Neil

                Sorry to hear about Flickr

For years I have used Mediafire to store files and photos.
I have always paid to protect users from advertising, about 3.75US a month for 1TB paid yearly. for the PRO paid version. The free version has advertising.

I have no idea if this is a good deal, I can say that the images in posts I have made here on the forum and linked to it still work around 7 years later.

I have no connection with the company apart from being a user.

Today I was given a link to a "Google Drive" by a customer, maybe that is another alternative. It had an inferior interface to Mediafire but it did work. Just looked it up and it appears to cost more.

I have not posted links they are easy to look up.

                Regards
                John

I use to use Photobucket until they also started to play up so now I have an external drive for all my photos and do not use these type of sites as I could see it happening again. This post has proved what I thought correct how long will it be before Flickr go the same as Photobucket

Photobucket has changed hands and more or less gone back to how it was with all the old images available again from albums belonging to the free loaders users

I keep my digital photos on my PC hard drive, and then I back it up. Why would people want to share them with anyone online?

Oh apparently you can store them on other services, Cloud, Flickr etc etc, but that I'm afraid, is somebody else's computer, no matter how you want to dress it up. You're loading your photos onto somebody else's computer.

                        Why?

The only reason I used them was that some of the forums I used you had to put photos up from sites like that, but now they have enable the uploading of photos direct from your own computer so really have no need to use them now

Storing digital media seems to be a total pain. The cloud based services seem to be either falling over or changing their terms and conditions. Running your own RAID storage will require you to have some skills in use and maintenance. Trusting a third party to look after your valuable data can end in tears if they fold so do you store the same data in multiple places to reduce your vulnerability? Security of data is going to have a cost.

                            Mike
