There seems to be a petition to ban them every year. This time though there appears to be a lot more support for it.

I must say it’s rather ironic that I can no longer buy 3% Hydrogen peroxide in the shops any more and yet Sainsbury’s openly sell explosives this time of year! cheeky

Be a lot more effective to ban cars!

Thanks for the reminder though. I've paid for the certificate from the doctor's to say that I'm no-longer insane. I now need to photocopy the rest of the forms, so I can buy an Explosives Precursors and Poisons license, to allow me to legally own and use the chemicals that I've had in the shed for the last 15 years…

Just had a read of the list in the regulations. Fortunately I live in France so I am not liable to 2 years in prison for possessing a lead acid battery in my car. It contains about 30% sulphuric acid.

At least three of the listed products are available at DIY outlets and many supermarkets here!

Meanwhile our young men are killing themselves daily with knives & the judiciary are doing bugger all to stop it, I don't blame the police but apparently stop & search is not politically correct, better that than a blade in the guts!!!!sadangry

Watching the news last night and hearing of the attacks on the fire service crews by thugs with fireworks, then yes I would be in favour of public displays only. Colin

Having had a dog who was absolutely terrified of fireworks I'd be in favour of limiting sale to 2 weeks end October/early November. As it is around here every minor celebration seems to be the excuse for pyrotechnics.

The Firework night has been hell for pets for as long as i can remember 50 + years, when I was a boy firework night was a very nice family event, we had a modest bonfire and some fireworks supplied by my grandfather. My Dad was in charge of setting off the fireworks and an enjoyable evening was had by all. Pets are probably frightened because it is an annual event rather than the norm, there are plenty of Gundogs that probably don't turn a hair at loud bangs so the lack of familiarity is what distresses domestic pets. We have an 11 week old kitten in residence and it was only mildly concerned at the fireworks and reassured by being stroked. I think we need to stop wanting to ban everything that causes some people brief discomfort while bringing great pleasure to many more. As just about everything is not going to be to everyones taste we cannot ban all the things that mildly inconvenience a minority of people. My mother has always had cats and dogs and they have all got through the firework season with very little distress.

When I was a kid in London in the '60s, Guy Fawkes night was awaited with anticipation.

We spent weeks building a bonfire on an old bombsite and fought hard for a premium spot to display our 'Guy's at a prominent spot near a bus stop or tube entrance.

One year we made a 'Guy' that looked like the Prime Minister. – enough money rolled in to finance a model aircraft and engine along with a great selection of fireworks. I still remember the ads " Light up the night with Standard Fireworks"

One sad memory though is of one of the local kids when somebody slipped a penny banger into his pocket which ignited the stash of fireworks already there – he was an ambulance case. Also that night a rocket was fired horizontally and it went through the window of Homerton (E9) Post Office and ignited the curtains.

Here in Australia, fireworks are banned in the states but not in the 'Territories' so that one may drive to Canberra ACT (Australian Capital Territory, where the pollies hang out) or the Northern Territory (Darwin) and purchase away. I find it strange that the politicians push to ban fireworks in every jurisdiction but their own!
