Never pay full price for anything

(someone has it on sale for less)

      Never buy things on sale

(they are end of line and about to be replaced)

      Never buy "new" things

(the "a" model never works properly)

      Never buy Chinese imports

(made of "chineseium" and not a patch on "genuine" machines.)

      Never buy old kit.

(tho a solid relic of the empire, likely to have been flogged to death over its existence)

What I have had, is a fun stab at producing ever more accurate and complex swarf, finding more and more efficient ways to clear up the mess I've made, and, learned a lot, some about the machines and tools, and some about me.

For a rank begginer, the hobby is one step forward, several steps back. However, over a career in the oilfield I've learned enough swear words to keep me motivated.

The more I learn, the more mortified I am at how little I know.

But I know more than I did last month.

Good man! Have been reading your exploits from the beginning, makes entertaining reading and I like your style!

Remember no one knows everything, the key to success is knowing enough! The key to successful purchasing is getting what you need that will perform as well as you need it to (not neccesarily as well as everyone else thinks it should) at the right price for you.

End of it all is there is a tremdous amount of self satisfaction to be gained when you churn out something that works as you want by your own efforts with the equipment and knowledge you have. Enjoy yourself and keep safe.

          Paul.

G/F (SWMBO) soundly lambasted me almost ten years ago when I invested $315Au in the then new Bitcoin fad.

As I had won $800 on lotto, I reclaimed my stake of $18, took her out to dinner and spent half of the remainder on my 'investment'.

Over the years I have redeemed enough to recover my $315 a few times over (to purchase workshop goodies and a new 'crypto-mining' PC).

Biggest problem nowadays is the dreaded 'Capital Gains Tax' if the balance are redeemed here in Oz.

Buy new, buy wisely and go with your instincts – as I once heard "There are no pockets in a shroud laddie"

We all gain experience as we go through life; some good, and some useful, but not so enjoyable.

"Experience is what allows you to identify the mistake, the next time that you make it"

The main thing is to enjoy your hobby, (without endangering or annoying anyone else – sometimes very difficult, with the "I WILL be offended" brigade ).

Model Engineering, in whatever form we practice it is satisfying and useful. You gain many new friends, even if only temporary as they say "Can you just?"" To look at the repaired "unfixable" brings great pleasure. At the same time you will expand your knowledge, of engineering and of people.. We all do.

And now back to the workshop!

              Howard
