Hi burried in one of the boxes that came with my super 7 was this drill sharpening attachment

so after giving it a try on the 59 deg it sharpened ok but the profile (if thats the term) did not look like a normal drill it sloped down a lot on the left hand side !

There were no instruction with it and I set it as best I could, the plate on the front end just above the edge of drill and half drill dia sticking out, so my questions is this finish ok, how should it be set up etc

Hope someone as one or something like it and can advise me.

I can confirm that Harold's instructions work well. I bought one of these, followed the instructions, found it didn't work and threw it in a drawer where it stayed for 10 years. After seeing Harolds write-up in his book I dug it out and found that it worked beutifully!

I don’t so much sharpen drills ..just shorten them a bit ( lot )

I am pleased Russell that you were eventually able to use the drill sharpening jig,as I say in my web pages, and you have found by experiance, the instructions for their use are far from adequate, at least from most suppliers. I wonder just how many are left unused, like yours was for many years, due to this.

What happens is the buyer of the new jig gets it out of the box, reads the inadequate instructions, mounts it (badly) beside his grinder and has a quick try.

As the result is awful he then puts it back in the box, in a drawer, and says to himself "I'll come back to that when I've got more time"

This means never.

I would guess this happens 90% of the time!

G'day Harold et al.

I modified my (el cheapo) drill sharpening rig to hold lathe tools at predictable angles before I made the HH grinding table. It worked better than freehand grinding. Basically, a round piece of ally with a slot to hold the tool which was locked in with grubscrews. The pivot also gained a few grubscrews to lock it. I can post photos if required.

You are almost certainly right Phil. Perhaps though this thread will encourage just a few who read it to get the jig out and give it another try. Unfortunately, that will still leave most in their box being unused.

All I can do is to give my drill sharpening pages a plug where appropriate. Incidentally, they are amongst the most viewed on my website.

As to drill sharpening.

A knowledge of the required result in terms of cutting faces and how these impact on how well and accurately the drill cuts. Is all and well. .but..I still have trouble generating those results…HH ‘s advice is good and the best (for me) bit is to keep notes about about what works. ….still mostly just shortening drills. .will get there one day..

Btw many stent/woden etc. owners seem to resist using them because of the fad of setting…

Yes Danny, let's see some photos.

Here is how I modified my drill jig to hold lathe tools.

A cheap $2 Aldi protractor to set 10°. As Harold says in his book 'Tool & Cutter Sharpening', a sharp tool is more important than the precise angle.
