          .

A note of the dimensions, and material, would help

… could you maybe post a sketch of the item ?

Is the V around the circumference of the roller, or along its length? If the first choise, you just need a tool ground to the required angle of the V, and plunge in say .020", move side to side a little, then in again, keep going till you reach the depth you require. For the second example, mount the same tool on its side at centre hight, lock the chuck, them move the saddle back and forth, winding the tool in a few thou each cutting stroke ie toward the chuck. basically its for a rig roller.

wil be using 45mm bright as ive got some

o/a length will be 70mm each end will be turned down to 30mm and 15mm long each side to fit into frame.

need v in centre and about 6mm deep to keep tubing central.

              hope that makes sense.

                That helps …

If I was machining this, I would first groove it with a thin parting tool; then use either a form tool [as Ian suggests], or cut each side seperately with left & right handed tools.

Grooving it first gives the tools an easier ride.

On my old lathe (apart from the fact that the roller is too long for it), a 6 mm groove would take ages to cut, if indeed it could be, it's a Super Adept, about 6" between centres, And I'd have to reverse the jaws on the chuck. But on my big Taiwanese lathe, stick it in the chuck, and in with the tool, a couple of minuites, done, a few more miniutes and the reduced bits on the ends are done, next job please.

Not sure what a rig roller is or how much load it would carry but I would put a radius at the tip of the V-tool to reduce stress concentrations at the bottom of the V.
