      @ajw

      I have my lathe and mill powered with 3 phase motors controlled with 3 phase vfd units and the work well.

      However while ordering a stack of components from rs on-line I stumbled across this single phase vfd (stock number 7858522) it is one of a range they supply.

      Didn't realise single phase controllers were available – could be useful!

          I don't think that they work with all types of single phase motors.

            I don’t think so. Read the manual!

            It is single phase INPUT but three phase OUTPUT.

            Most VFDs are single phase.

              As far as I can see it's a bog standard 230V single phase in and 230V 3-phase out. Interesting that the output frequency goes to 600Hz though. Even more interesting is that RS list it as non-compliant.

                Download the relevant manuals from the RS site and you will find they are in fact 3 phase output as is usual for vfds!

                  We used to use a single phase in / single phase out VSDs at work for driving sub 500 watt permanent capacitor single phase fan motors but to be perfectly honest they were not very good. We only used them as a retrofit on motors that were already installed and it was too much hassle to change them. We did a lot of investigating such drives and came th the conclusion that nobody produces anything that is any good. Single phase in and three phase out is the only way to go with everything except maybe fan drives.

                    Oh sorry guys! If all else fails – read the manual!
