On a more serious note; I have informed the secretary of our Day Club that tomorrow's (19th) meeting shall be our last until further notice due to the vulnerable age of our members. We shall update their contact details and ascertain whether they have support from family/friends for basic necessities. Otherwise I feel that it is our duty to organise some help for the most vulnerable members.

As the local secretary of a one make motorcycle club I am about to set up a private Facebook account (if such a thing exists) for our members to use etc until this crisis passes.

Two weeks ago I, to my shame, started this thread. I was in the process of rewriting my will. This I have done but I cannot get two persons to witness my signature.

The trick is not to cough and shiver while you ask…

There's nowt to be ashamed of in this thread..it's a subject folk want to discuss. Some would rather avoid the issue as is their right.

One simple solution to your witness problem is to ask a couple off friends if they'd mind just signing the witness part by post – no-one will know. These are difficult times. Or just find a quiet corner shop/post office with a couple of folk in there and explain from 2metres, sign and pass it across. Risk is low in quiet rural areas as yet. I just got my LPA forms for wife and myself done (something we'ld been meaning to do for ages and finally got stirred into).

Everybody keeps saying bat but I am certain it is the poor old pangolin that is supposed to be responsible. So you can keep eating bat – just avoid the pangolin soup.

I don't think it was the pangolin's fault. If people left them alone and stopped converting them into "Traditional Chinese Medicine" we'd all have been fine.

We now have real proof that this is serious: The BBC have suspended filming of Eastenders!

                No I don’t watch it.

One of our freezers just died. Guess what – out of stock everywhere.
Fortunately my OH is untidy with shoving stuff in freezers and this time of year I've eaten a lot of our own frozen produce so i managed to repack it all neatly into the other two.

                      Today's good news:

Japanese flu drug 'clearly effective' in treating coronavirus, says China

Medical authorities in China have said a drug used in Japan to treat new strains of influenza appeared to be effective in coronavirus patients, Japanese media said on Wednesday.

Zhang Xinmin, an official at China’s science and technology ministry, said favipiravir, developed by a subsidiary of Fujifilm, had produced encouraging outcomes in clinical trials in Wuhan and Shenzhen involving 340 patients.

“It has a high degree of safety and is clearly effective in treatment,” Zhang told reporters on Tuesday.

Patients who were given the medicine in Shenzhen turned negative for the virus after a median of four days after becoming positive, compared with a median of 11 days for those who were not treated with the drug, public broadcaster NHK said.

When our Day Club Link Club met today there were a few regulars missing, including one who was confined to her (gated) retirement villiage.

As we run a weekly raffle it was decided to offer additional goodies: – All the bags of Kit-Kats, Bounty Bars and other treats (that are normally used for quiz prizes) have expiry dates so we made the decision to share them among the attendees. Easter is coming so a few chokkies come in handy anyway.

What was interesting was that one of the committee included a roll of toilet paper among the raffle prizes (as a joke) and the elderly (96 years old) lady who selected it as her prize remarked that it was the first toilet roll that she had managed to obtain in two weeks.

This actually made me feel sad.

Anyway, managed to cheer them up a bit when I reminded them that their pension was a more secure income than the people who had casual jobs and now face bleak prospects.

Of possible concern is the idea that desperate people turn to criminal activities to survive. One only has to search for and read the various published documents regarding "Crime vs Unemployment" to gain an insight into the potential issues.

Maybe that's why some people stock up on various items.

The effects of the virus are being to impact in our village; a group of ladies run a drop in centre in the village hall every Wednesday, it is a well attended event that brings the elderly together for a couple of hours where they can get tea, coffee, biscuits and cakes and there is a book exchange where they can get plenty of reading matter. The population of our village is comprised of a large percentage of retired people so this event is well attended, yesterday there were only two customers who attended, whereas normally there would be around forty odd. The event is now on hold until the pandemic has run its course which is a shame as for some of the attendees it is probably their only contact with other persons. The effects of the pandemic will be far reaching and last into the future.

Previously on this topic I mentioned that my Son in law and grandson were trapped in Mexico having had their return flights cancelled and the probability of having to stay there throughout the pandemic, well my daughter managed, after much hard work on the internet, to purchase two tickets that leave Cancun today arriving at Heathrow, via Washington, tomorrow morning, when checking their documentation my daughter found that very helpfully the great American administration had taken it upon themselves to cancel their Esta’s meaning they couldn’t travel via the USA. My daughter worked hard last night and by 1.30 am she had managed to reinstate their ESTA’s but only if she paid the fee of fourteen dollars again for each, so hopefully fingers crossed they should be back in England tomorrow, it is difficult to describe how much heartache this situation has caused our family, my wife and daughter have not been sleeping while this goes, perhaps now we can all get some sleep. There must be many families who are in similar circumstances, my heart goes out to them, it isn’t easy particularly when the Foreign office and the British Consul in Mexico were unhelpful.

Glad to hear they look like they will make it home safely, Dave W. I saw there's a bunch of Aussies stuck in Peru and Australia chose to shut down its embassy there and pretty much leave them in the lurch. Seems the authorities are universally unhelpful in many such cases.

First reported case of Coronavirus in our town today (Cairns, Pop. 120,000) so it's starting to hit home. Pretty much all meetings of all groups etc cancelled. I figure I have at least six months' worth of unfinished projects in the shed so no big deal to stay home for a bit.

Thanks for your thoughts Hopper, all may not be as it is expected, the boys got to the airport and the airline, United, stopped them boarding, that’s all we know at the moment, waiting for further update from Daughter. Sorry to hear that you have reported cases in Cairns now, it looks as though it is going to reach every corner of the world. I envy you living in Oz, was out there 10 years ago when Daughter got married in Nelson Bay near Newcastle, spent a month in Oz and was very impressed, I have spent a lot of time travelling the world and I could happily move to Oz, not keen on the snakes and spiders though.

Wife witnessed 10 out of 14 packets of rice being confiscated at the checkout! HURRAH!

The death rate so far from coronavirus worldwide is keeping pace with the deaths from gunshot wounds in the USA. One person in one million of the worlds population has died so far.

False hope for the flights from Mexico, the boys were told that because they hadn’t been out of Europe for fourteen days they couldn’t be landed in America, even though they were transiting through, and the airline had confirmed no problem, so the airline have rescheduled them for flights on the 26th, again transiting via Washington, so we hope the situation will resolve then, fingers crossed or it looks like August before they will be able to return, it’s going to be boring sitting in Mexico till then, just hope they like Mexican food.

First reported case of Coronavirus in our town today (Cairns, Pop. 120,000) …

First case I know of here with any personal connection to me today, however remote. The distant work colleague of a relative is feeling better now she's in week two. Unpleasant, not a medical emergency. Usual self-treatment at home did the trick.
