Coolant Pump For Bandsaw.

I was having a clean up I came across a new 12V windscreen washer pump.

I was wondering if this would be too small for BS5s bandsaw as long as I have very good filtration?

I use a windscreen washer pump to provide coolant on my minilathe, see|:

The pump has proved very reliable and the simple fabric filter is very effective at removing small particles.

It will work just fine ! You might need a fish tank air line clamp to control the flow though.

You will need a tank for the oil so why not get a complete tank and pump kit to try. Can be found for around £10-12 from E-Bay et al.

More work but a flow splitter with a proper needle valve or similar in the return to tank line will be more controllable than a simple tube clamp in the delivery line. Never hand much luck with tube clamps on pumped liquids. My experience has been that they sort of work but the sweet spot for nice behaviour is limited.

One of my first coolant pumps was a winscreen washer pump which worked OK for a reasonable time but eventually the oil in the solution caused the impeller to fail. As you already have one, use it.

Flexible coolant nozzles with a control valve are cheap on ebay.. This one costs AU $1.09 delivered from China. **LINK**

As this is a 12V pump you will need a power supply. Using a variable supply is a much better way of controlling the flow than throttling the output.

If you only have a fixed 12V supply and are throttling the output, try putting a 12V lamp in series with the motor (start with a 21W brake light and swap to a 45/55W headlight if not enough pressure.) This will provide a near constant current supply to the pump, reducing flow (speed) but maintaining torque and thus pressure as you throttle the output. using the lamp will produce less stress on the pump and reduce power consumption.

Just google "windscreen washer tank" or "universal windscreen washer tank" and you will find plenty of hits at various prices. Car scrappy or breaker might get you better quality.

Cant help you with a bypass & splitter system. Just something I've used on a piece of equipment and found rather more controllable than a simple tap.

Roberts suggestion of varying pump power input works quite well bbut these small pumps tend to have a rather non linear variation in amount of liquid puped against power supplied. My experience is OK control over a certain range, down to maybe half, then it all gets iffy. really want something thats about right in the first place rather than hoping to considerably reduce the output from "I've got this one but its way too powerful" pump.

At one time, I used to use a cut off saw which used a car type fuel lift pump to supply coolant. When the diaphragm failed, we cut out some polythene sheet to replace the diaphragm and finished off the work in hand!

To fit such a thing to a bandsaw you would need to devise some form of eccentric to drive it. From the wormshaft, so that delivery is related to the speed of the blade, although a bypass valve will probably be needed to regulate the flow.

I just use a squeezer bottle with a mixture of cutting fluid & water for lubrication & catch the run off down a small attached piece of guttering into a tray or bucket.

I ordered a window washer kit from epay comes with a roll of hose etc.

I my box of power packs ( 2 boxes to be honest) I found this one.

I will keep the on I found for my lathe.
