Right near the end of the Model Engineer show I picked up an Osborn Titanic II milling chuck with four imperial collets, wrench, Osborn Milling Calculator (plastic slidey thing) and instructions. It was in original packaging seems to have had only light use, so I was surprised no-one else had grabbed it at just £25.

I had gone hoping to spot a good deal on a Clarkson collet chuck, but I'm well happy with this one.

Right at the end I spotted a few collets on the Tracy stand, but no cash and they were packing up (plus they didn't have sizes on…)

Now I need to track down a set of metric collets. Ebay is NOT the best place for this – some larger collets are going for more than I paid for a complete unit!

          Hi,

What fitting is your chuck? If INT30 I would be interested in a swap for a Clarkson. Although mine only has imperial collets, metric collets are plentiful for this chuck.

Alternatively – perhaps the Pozilock collets from the likes of Chronos fit an Osborn?

I had an MT2 Osborn Titanic II for my Emco and have been trying to get an INT30 ever since as I liked it very much.

          Good price by the way!

          Cheers,

          Mike.

Not sure if these ones from rotagrip will fit your specific Osborn but not too bad pricewise

I have a Pozilock chuck and 2 Osborn Titanics, the collets are interchangeable. My Posilock came from Chronos.

                Thanks Jason,

Yes those are the ones, and cheaper than Ebay! Well spotted. Will pop into Rotagrip next time I'm in Brum if my 'wanted' ad doesn't find some second hand ones.

                Hi Mike,

Not sure I want to swap for a Clarkson after reading why you want to swap It's MT3 anyway.

Interestingly the cheapest on ebay for a single collet is Rotagrip and give you a better postage rate than on their regular website. I wonder if they will be at Ally Pally.

Mike, you might be better looking for a DA180 for Int 30 with metric collets. I don't think metric clarkson collets are available that cheap as everyone has an imperial set and wants to go metric.

                    Hi Neil,

Just silly sentimentality really…..plus I like the black finish of the Osborn! I even keep my Clarkson for best and tend to use one of the posilock chucks most of the time. RDG sold some off recently at a bargain price because the boxes were scratched.

The Rotagrip prices are good – I was going to offer you a set of metric pozilocks but by the sounds of it I may soon have to move away from my imperials!

Thanks Bazyle. I will keep an eye out.

Dave (Daveb), when you say the Chronos Posilock collets fit the Titanic chuck, are you talking about Titanic or Titanic2 chucks? Presumably the holding system is modified in the Titanic2, although how I do not know – do you? And when you say interchangeable , do you mean precise fit for for precise work? Many thanks, Adam

Adam, my chucks are Titanic2, the Pozilock collets are a very snug fit and appear to be identical to the Titanic ones. I have not carried out any measurement to check run out so can't comment on this but I've found them OK. The Titanic1 is a completely different design using a collet, a cylindrical sleeve and a separate nut instead of a 1 piece collet.

                        Dave

Dave, do both the Titanic and the Titanic2 take advantage of the threaded shank of threaded Clarkson -type cutters?

                            Adam,

Mine is a Titanic II and it takes threaded shank cutters. They work just like Clarkson except the anti-rotation is provided by a tongue rather than a cross-bar.

Yes, they will not work with plain shank cutters.
