Hi Folks, I am attemting to build a home made shaper, got to stage of making the clapper box and need to make the taper pin or find someone who can supply me with a #8 taper pin 3:6" long and a reamer to suit, has anyone any suggestions please? Dimensions are similar to the atlas 7" shaper, or maybe there is a gash box lurking in a workshop somewhere that is unwanted and for which I would pay coin of the realm for

They don't actually have to be tapered, at least one of mine is not , and that shaper is at least 70 years old now. There is nothing to retain the pin either, it is just a good fit.

Other than that, you could consider setting up for a taper on the lathe and making a reamer at the same time as you make a pin or two. You make the reamer from silver steel by first turning the desired taper on it, then milling or filing away exactly half the diameter along the length of the taper, making sure you don't damage the edges. Then harden and temper. Such a reamer will not remove material as fast as a conventional reamer but it will do the job.

Thanks John, perhaps I'll try a good fitting pin first as it seems the easiest option, woulld be interesting to try your taper suggestion -maybe later

              Hi Mick

I have a clapper box form an unknown shaper which is of no use to me. It's smaller than the one on my 10" Elliott shaper so perhaps could be about the right size for you.

I am working overseas right now, if your still interested, when I get back home next week I will PM you the details so you can see if it meets your requirements.

Thanks Nigel, I would be very interested. My shaper is made from a variety of unassociated parts from here and there, motor from a floor polisher giving 360rpm,the slides are from a very old lathe, the tool slide is the cross slide from an unknown lathe, the yoke is driven from a rejigged gearbox from a industrial dough making m/c,the chassis, ram and slides, scotch yoke auto feed made ffrom scratch, I like to make useful things from discarded pieces of other machines, the fun is fitting them together and also saves a lot of work, one of my other efforts was a dedicated tool grinder made from an ex forensic specimen slicing machine which does everything I need at a low cost, enjoy your trip abroad and I look forward to hearing from you

                Regards Mick

                        Hi Mick

Here's some pictures of the clapper box I have, It's 4" long x 2-3/4" wide. Its got surface rust though I think it will clean up nicely. Please send me a PM if you want it and I will find out the postage cost.

There is some play on the pin, probably this will need replacing and the through hole trued up, the pin measures 7/16" parallel so could be made 12mm.
