I have a Citenco Varicontrol motor that needs some refurbishment.

It's the type that was commonly used as a Laboratory Stirrer.

24:1 worm reduction on the output; and two concentric knobs on the back end, giving on/off and continuous speed control.

I have removed the bell-housing from the output end, but cannot access the other end, because the speed control knob is stubbornly fixed. It's held by two radial grubscrews … but I suspect that these are very long. I have tried various penetrating fluids, to no avail. The knob is a couple of inches diameter, and the threads are presumably in the central boss.

Before I resort to destroying the knob, just to remove it … Does anyone have one of these motors? A photo, or description, of the underside of the knob would be a great help. …

If I know the topography, I may be able to inject some penetrating fluid into the right places.

        Thanks

        MichaelG.

          Hi there, Michael,

I have a motor that I think is of the type you mention.

However, I'm currently confined to barracks with a lurgi so I can't get to the workshop.

If you haven't heard from me in a week, send me a PM to jog my memory.

          Best regards,

          Swarf, Mostly!

            Many thanks for this.

                Thanks, Bill

Swarf, Mostly! has kindly put some pictures in an album … but his is a slightly different model [probably earlier, and better made]

Mine is the "Blue Hammerite painted" one, Model KTQS II

The knob has a stick-on Aluminium label, but I suspect it looks much like Swarf's on the underside.

My guess is that the nice Brass insert was "improved" to a Steel one, to save a few Farthings.

… The screws are "impossibly tight", so probably rusted-in.

                .

If yours is the same as Swarf's then there is no need for photos, but if it's the one like mine then a photo of the underside of the knob would be much appreciated.

                .

                MichaelG.

                  Hi Michael

This one is KQPS34 looks similar to Swarf's but badged for Griffin and George. Speed control knob is secured by a pair of grub screws, so all 'same-same' by the look of it.

                      Thanks Bill,

I think mine will be bathing in PlusGas tomorrow.
