Anybody used these or know what they are called please ?

Seems like a useful idea but am puzzled that I've never seen them before …….. are they specialist miniature model making tools ?

Whats the right name for them please ?

According to the site on which you found that picture, it's a filing disc: **LINK**

          http://www.maritima-et-mechanika.org/tools/diefiler/diefiler.html

"The ends were rounded on a filing disc mounted on an arbor in the lathe (such filing discs seem to extremely rare today, but I was able to acquire one some years ago)."

Never seen one of them before. Looks kind of neat. Probably superseded by the belt sander. But less messy for use inside the workshop. (My belt sander lives outside.)

Thanks for the replies. Was hoping for a slightly more technical or specific name, try googling filing disc or filing disc lathe or rotary filing disc or circular file and you get swamped with non relevant findings.

Have been pondering what key words I should use in a search that might find them.

There is something similar here http://www.lathes.co.uk/rindis/

Curiously enough I have a key cutting machine which uses this type of wheel to file the lands on key blanks.

No, I'm not a locksmith but found the machine at a local dealer. It's missing a few bits but I intend to convert it into a mini saw or milling machine in due course.

I have seen the cutters in the OP before but not for some time, I'll keep my eyes open for any still in circulation.

                      Good Idea,

I emailed the chap, and he replied saying he has never ever seen any since he first got them second hand many years ago. Known to be very rare when he bought them initially.

Well found, but my command of the German language is non existent, barring ordering a beer.

Fortunately their website is published in English too. wink

Peak4 and Michael – Very well done THANKYOU big heaps.

Must admit my google searches were very frustrating.

Minimum diameter 160mmm though. Sounds a bit larger than the one in the original pic, or is it just the scale of the shot? Sure would be a handy thing to have.

                                  I emailed Lukas.

                                  None in stock.

                                  No Australian distributors

Minimum order 50 pieces @ €150 per piece and will manufacture to your drawings.

Well, that was all very interesting, am not going to rush out and buy any.

150E per piece !! Eeek! They must be solid gold under that steel coating. And no surprise there is no Aussie distributor. Situation normal.
