Yay! Result!

Thanks Brian – 'don't be timid, it will move' was the key. I had to whack it pretty hard with a flipping big hammer but it did indeed move and the bearings have survived. I think I'll polish a gnat's off the axle to make it a firm push fit before reassembling.

Yay indeed Robin. A bit of light polishing with Scotchbrite will ease off the tight fit and make it all so much easier to turn the pin round in the future.

I've used that method many times with success to help in bearing fitting, a snug push fit is what to aim for
