They are more expensive, yes, but we can do slightly better than £5 for a 3mm one:

Zoro currently has 90 degree 3mm and 6mm at £3.69 and £3.99 respectively.

Most of my spotting drills are quite long so to increase rigidity for lathe use I cut one of mine down a bit.

66mm, I reckon:

Depends where you buy, most of my HSS ones are about 1/2 that length for sizes upto 1/4".
