Carriage (Myford Power Cross Feed stop)

Hi a couple of quick questions firstly looking at the carriage drawing what is the purpose of the small stud KA33 knock off peg, secondly I have for the second time wound the carriage feed screw to far out is there away of stopping this happening ?

Hello Harry,

The peg pushes the power cross feed button in to prevent damage when facing under power. I don't really know what to say as regards the cross slide. I try not to wind out more than about 6 inches from when the slide is fully in.

There is a procedure for re-engaging the cross-slide nut on the PXF models and I'm sure one of the members will point you to a link.

You now know where the end is . Paint the non bearing part of the slide just exposed in this condition red.

Put in a stop – see JS posting in 'what did you do today' thread.

Drill the end of the screw and put in a screw and big washer to stop the nut coming off.

Put a clamp on the end of the screw though that loses a bit of length.

Congratulations to Steamer for knowing what you were actually talking about. As a courtesy to other readers please can you make your posts a bit more informative in setting the scene.

Keep up guys! As with my ealier post it assumes you read every post as it comes in and remember the gist of the content. I had just read the JS post and when I saw Steamer's mention of the FPX I actually though he was talknig about a mill. Didn't matter for my answer really and the JS mod is less relevant for a lathe. Now I checked Harry's photo album I think he is talking about a Myford lathe apron interlock.

I think it is a problem people often have that when a subject is running round their head they go straight into the next sentence in an email or forum forgetting that not eveyone was 'in their head' to hear the internal monologue. Even a few ME articles seem to start on the second paragraph.

Instead of a stop you can also fit a small piece with only keyway to the end of the crosslide screw, the diameter is the core diameter of the screw. You than can still remove the slide and replace it without problem. Niko.

The give away is part no KA33, Myford Power Cross Feed stop.

You have to wind the leadscrew in until it just touches the obstruction. Since the drive to the cross feed lead screw is by a keyed gear driven from the main lathe feedscrew, you can them rock the main leadscrew either way withe PXF engaged until the key picks up. Once you have done it the first time, it ceases to be a problem. The red paint marker on the carriage seems to be a good idea if further help is required.
