How do I remove a broken 2 B A tap from mild steel? [email protected]  tap is carbon steel

It all depends on whether you broke it on the cutting  or backing stroke. Is it a 2,3 or 4 flute. If a 2 flute then a centre punch and 8 oz hammer can shatter the remains. if 4 flute then a tap extractor and patience will get it out. 3 flute extractors are, however hard to find. If the job is worth it then a spark eroder can be used. HTH

I read a tip that you can use a solution of alum salts to eat away taps broken in aluminium. Not much help for mild steel, I know, but it’s a problem I’ve had.

 

Unfortunately these days the chemists don’t sell chemicals anymore. Does anyone know a source for alum salts?

You can buy “broken tap remover”  on Ebay for £8 + P & P. There’s some there now item 290400365745. I bought some last year & “it does what it says on the tin “
