I cannot find any reference to this question, so please accept my apology if this has been asked and answered before.

Now we all know that the colour red comes in various shades. What is the correct RAL code for the "British" red used on machinery such as lathes, locomotives etc etc?

              Thanks for the info Michael.

So British red is RGB code #ab4b52 which is more or less RAL 3018 if I use this converter -> https://rgb.to/hex/ab4b52

Is there someone with a Dulux RAL colour chart that can check this for me? Sorry I am from South Africa and busy with the restoration of an old Colchester lathe and I am trying to get the original red used matched to a RAL colour.

                Hi

I will try and find my charts tomorrow if I haven't thrown them away recently. I had a clear out! Perhaps best for you to look at BS 4800 which has been around for many years and was the range used in the 60's and 70's and still used. May have been in use in the 50's. Used long before we went into the RAL colours after joining Europe with changes to British Standards, Codes of Practice and so on. RAL is a larger range depending on usage ie wall paint, colour coatings, powder coatings for metal windows etc

The BS 4800 range probably was used and so convert to equivalent in RAL. I see that 'INTERPON' have offices/factory at International Paint Ltd, Alberton North 1449. Tel+27 (0) 11 907 8195. Pa number/reference. They may include Dulux in their group.

Forgot………Not much help but it looks to me like Amsterdam Red! Rather than British red which I have never come across before

For what its worth, Colchester is same group as Harrison lathes ie 600 Group. The red used on my Harrison M300 chip back plate assembly and brace is Wine Red RAL3005 . The other colour used was Goose Grey a BS4800 colour

I got this information from 600 Group directly, simply by asking by email.

I went to the paint shop today and it appears the red I am looking for matches to RAL 3001 or RAL 3002. I cannot carry the lathe stand to the RAL chart nor bring the RAL chart with me … I think I will go with the RAL 3002.

                          Hi H

Should you decide to sell it or move on in the future others cannot turn easily to RAL charts or cart another machine to your door to compere and so on. There may be slight differences but looking at my small chart I can see little difference, if any, between 3001 and 3002. On a m/cycle forum years ago when a similar question arose for an old bike one reply was that the foreman painter probably mixed 54 gallons of top coat at a time and there was never a straight match of bikes in the showroom. Here, in the 50's house painters still mixed their own matches….I'm sure they weren't a perfect match, light, faded with age, etc. Even in the 70 and 80's red car paint was notoriously bad as a colour. Similarly blue was poor as anodising colour.

Best wishes and happy turning on the fresh gleaming machine soon.

                            Thanks M,

Very vaild point! I will stick to the cheaper of the two colour.
