I need to braze (or similar high temp fixing ) a copper cap to stainless steel tube, both are about 1.5 mm thick. It's for the hot cap on a hot-air engine. I no longer have oxy-acet. . I did one using a copper alloy based MIG wire a few years ago but can't find any now, this worked well. I think silver solder will be on the border line for the temp. I'm expecting red heat or near. My equipment is MIG and stick, and a couple of blowlamps. It's a one -off so don't want to buy extra kit if possible.

          Hi Gordon,

Consider using a 38% silver cadmium free silver solder and a flux suitable for stainless eg HT5.

Melting range 650 – 710 deg. You should be able to braze with this combination using a propane torch.

Thanks for that, been looking at your site and did not realise that there are higher melting point solders eg. your 418 and 424, aprox. 750 to 800 deg.C. Would these work with a propane torch ?

Yes – but that would depend on other factors eg gas pressure, joint design, insulation, burner size. These factors are unique to you. The simple "yes" leads to a multitude of other questions more easily answered on a one to one basis than via a forum. It may be like opening a can of worms!
