I have now turned my attention to stripping and painting the tender for my 5" Class 7 loco.

There is no tool tunnel fitted and i would like to add one.

I searched out the series by Doug Hewson, and found the article.

Using his template and dimensions i have cut and folded the parts, but they do not look correct.

It all looks bit over size and the front end looks different when folded to the picture in the article.

Can anyone help please.

Finally finished the tender rebuild and its now ready for some transfers and lining.

I thought i might have a bash at lining myself. A club friend lent me some lining pens and i had some humbrol left from a 00 model paint job. So this is what i want to paint>>>>>>>>

And this is my over confident practice on an old loco roof. LOL.

Now i know it dont look good, and i need to practice.

so this is my plan:-

1. the pen does not hold a lot of paint. Need a better application tool.

2. the paint was a bit thin. Buy some more.

3. you have to start very carefully or you get flooding. This one is practice.

4. its not put me off trying again. when i dont know, daughter comes tomorrow form NZ for three weeks with children.

If all else fails i might try Fox transfers!!!

Don't all laugh too loudly, i don't want to hear you all in Huddersfield.

You need a Border pen if you want to hold more paint, they are a lot wider.

I remember [decades ago] watching the chap in BSA, lining a petrol tank.

Tank supported on his left hand, and a fully loaded dagger brush in his right

The classic D shaped line was produced in a matter of seconds; then he flipped the tank around on his hand and did one to match on the other side [these are of course, mirror images!].

The draughting pen would normally use ink which I suspect would be a lot thinner than paint. Also you appear to have done the job freehand. I would recommend using a straight edge even if you use a border pen as suggested by JasonB

Can I just say what a fantastic job you have made on that tender. I'll be attempting a 3.5 BR1D soon and if I can come close to the finish and fit of the one you have made I would be very happy. Nice work.

I did use a ruler on a small part and then really just played around.

Would low-tack pinstriping tape help?

I've not tried the latter. When i did some lining on my RC heli canopies I used the thin blue 3m tape and eyballed two parallel linesarond the curves

Drafting pens are not suitable for applying paint. They are used with thin ink.

Pin striping is best done with a special pen with a roller at the end like a Beugler (rollers are available in different widths and combinations for painting double lines) or special  brushes with very long and thin bristles.

Lots of videos on Youtube showing the application of pin striping.

You should also use a thicker paint, used by sign writers which contains more pigment than ordinary paint which is applied in one application only. Second layer difficult to apply.

In a previous life I sold lining tape, both the type where a centre section was torn out leaving a strip either side and also the type that left a line of colour when you pulled a carrier tape away – Perhaps if the first type is still available it might help? – mind you I also remember a TV documentary about Van den Plas where they showed a strip being applied the full length of a BMC 1300 in one go with a long brush loaded with paint, like Michael saw on the tank. No guide or anything – just a steady hand and years of experience. I am deeply envious of course!

Succumbed and bought some transfers from Fox, and now i need to sit down and work out how to replace the amount of dosh they cost me

I will probably cover them with Humbrol clear gloss, has anyone used the stuff? I have a new unopened bottle. Does it level out good or will i end up having to paint the whole job?

Like Michael g, I too have memories of the BSA painter doing the tank, fabulous skill.

On a visit with the electricity board students association, first time most of us had seen a melon for lunch, guessing how to tackle it without looking a fool.

Does anyone have an automatic cylinder drain design for 5" loco's. Just watched a video on YouTube of the Sale area model engineers running day. A 9f looked to have auto drains. Mine are worked by a push pull rod from the cab and do not always work very well.

I have a Beugler Pin Striping Kit , This Kit is brand new ,never been used, an impulse buy I am afraid.
Looking at their website the kit I have would seem to be a Professional Kit priced are you sitting down? £219
How ever there is no way I would have paid that amount (I have a reputation to uphold, i am Scottish and very mean.)
Joking aside this kit is of no use to me, if you are interested drop me a PM and tell me what it would worth to you if anything.

Getting back to the tunnel on the tender, from my drawings the tunnel is parallel along it's length. Yours seem to expand into a cone shape. The cross section is a strange shape because it fits within the coal chute. I'm building a 3.5 inch Brit and the tender is a laser kit which doesn't have the chute, although he's cut a hole in the bulkhead. I am trying to make the complete tunnel, which looks much better.

Looking at your photos, there seems to be a front bulkhead missing.

Thanks for that, I'm already a member but didn't recognise the abbreviation. I think the forum is mainly for the Winson kit builders but it might have diversified now. I haven't been on there for ages.
