I never use the front of the wheel when grinding drill bits or tool bits,I use the side of the wheel. Am I doing something wrong,will I be drummed out ?

No Larry you aren't doing anything wrong, perceived wisdom is that you should only use the periphery of the wheel but using the side is fine if you don't put massive pressure onto it.
