I’m replacing the bearings on an X2 type chinese mill. The manufacturer says

Two bearings will be needed. 30206 & 60206

I’m going for quality bearings, probably SKF, so the choice of 30206 (the taper bearing at the bottom of the spindle) is straightforward.

The 60206 equivalent is a 6206 I think (top of the spindle), and the choice is quite large.  I understand the differences between open, shielded and sealed (and there is also both sides or one side) but what would you recommend? Googling I’ve come actross stuff on heat being generated, grease melting etc. Shielded or sealed would seem to be sensible. I’m just a hobby user, and the mill certainly won’t have continuous heavy use.

Also, I’m thinking that a shielded or sealed bearing will already be lubricated / greased, but what grease would you use for the taper bearing?

Many thanks. As you can tell, bearings are a new area for me !

There is a critical difference between shielded and rubber sealed bearings. The rubber seals contact the inner race for a full seal. But they create friction that can stall or overload your motor on start up.

That is why machine tools commonly use steel shielded bearings. There is a tiny gap between the shield and inner race, so no friction.  So, replace your bearings with the same type you took out, or equivalent by SKF.

Both sealed and shielded come packed with grease for life. Your taper roller bearing will be good with common automotive wheel bearing grease.
