An AutoCad 2000 query – Can anyone tell me how to arrange for the “Text” of a linear dimension to always be inserted on the inside of its associated arrows. In practice I find that in most cases this is what will happen (system set-up?) but in other cases dependent upon the relative sizes of text and space available, the text will be placed on the outside of the arrows.

When this happens it is easy enough to set Modify/Properties/Fit/"Text Inside" to ON which will always give the desired result but can the system be arranged to ensure that this will be the default setting irrespective of relative spaces available.

Am I right in assuming that there is a file buried somewhere in the AutoCad folder showing the defaults settings? If there is, I have not been able to find it. Any help would be most appreciated.

You can make dimension settings 'stick' by saving them as a named style.

When you do 'file', 'new', it normally allows you to choose the template drawing to be used. I believe the default is ACADISO.DWT

So any new drawing you make will inherit the text, dimension, line, etc. styles saved in its template file.

I find it easier just to take a known good drawing, 'save as' a different name, delete all the entities and start with a blank canvas.

Andrew – Like the idea of your coolant drip feeder. How controllable is the flow?

Long while since I used AutoCad, but you can setup you own default for model and paper space. There should be plenty of YouTube or text files that will give you the information.

You could perhaps set up a drawing that contains one dimension set up the way you want it, and save it as a separate drawing.

Insert that drawing as a block into your new drawing, and use the matchproperty command to match your new dimension to the style of the one you set up previously.

I have not verified this with dimension styles, but I have used it with other things such as symbols and such.

                  .

Problem now solved – Following a YT video (should have done this first) the answer was found to be: Check "Text always inside" option via the command DIMSTY. Easy when you know how!

                    Thanks for all the input

Does 2000 have a save named workspace option? If so save your preferred setup workspace with your name and use that as the default workspace.
