It's true, I can't help but love the underdog. My Daily driver is the worlds least loved Porsche (the 924), my fun weekend car is the car that had a terrible reputation for killing people during oversteer moments (Triumph GT6), and if I was a fan of football I'd almost certainly be following Accrington Stanley or somesuch.

Which brings me on to my live steam interest; does anyone know if anyone has ever modelled any of the Austerity locomotives? I'm sure the Hunslet 0-6-0 has been copied, but what about the WD Austerity 2-8-0? And more importantly, the ultimate ugly duckling, the SR Q1 class?

I'm cutting my teeth on a Stuart 10H, but one day once I've refined some skills I'd love to tackle a Q1. I realise its a shape that would make kids run screaming but I'm smitten with anything that has function over form.

Has anyone had a crack at one of these?

      Thanks, Jon.

                Jon; Duncan;

Nick Feast did a beautiful job of design, writeup and construction of a Q1 in these pages. Castings from Polly/Bruce Engineering. 3-1/2" gauge.

LBSC also did the S160, the American locomotive that was shipped over to Britain/Europe, and eventually went everywhere. 2-1/2" gauge.

Aster did the BR52, German war locomotive, in Gauge 1. It's in kit form, though sold out. Aster also did the SNCF 141R, built in 2 places in Canada and one in the USA, something like 1300 were shipped over at the end of hostilities.

Can't think of any others at the moment.

You wouldn't want to meet up with her on a Saturday night!

I'm not sure what is included in austerity. Obviously the 2-10-0 and 2-8-0 were and so was the Q1.

Would people consider the Ivatt 2 and Ivatt 4 to be austerity? Any others?

You could try the American 2-10-0 S160, built for UK/European wartime use and postwar reconstruction. It bears a passing resemblance to Austere Ada, and the Churnet Valley Railway has 2 (full size) runners.

                      Hi Jon,

Blackgates now market the Clarkson range, and included is the 5"g 2-10-0 WD Austerity loco. You can download the Clarkson catalogue on the Blackgates website.

                      Cheers,

                      Julian

That's some excellent leads, thank you. I'm a little constricted due to the size of my lathe (Myford ML7) but I'm sure I'll find something of interest.

                        Thanks again,

                        Jon.

                          Nick Feast's building of the Q1 ran for 28 installments in ME from Vol. 202, 05 Jun.2009 issue 4353 to Vol. 206, 08 Apr. 2011 issue 4401.

I'm mainly glad someone has done it. Such a soft spot for these ugly ducklings.

There are 5" gauge models of the Austerity 0-6-0 running, and there are a number of the 2-10-0,s about

and a really brilliant 2-8-0 in Holland that is brought over to U.K. on visits to club tracks, but as already

said see Blackgates catalogue with the Clarkson designs

                                  Hi Jon

Nick Feast in a member of the local club, and his fleet (he has 3 Q1's!) all run well. It is a good size, in that its not too heavy to lift into the car/work bench or track. I belive that he has updated the drawings to remove any errors. I am building one in 5" gauge (thats the link to it at Model pro boards) Its worth dropping Rob Spears a email a Bulleid builders group, there is a lot of information on them. The Myford should be fine for the 3 1/2" gauge loco. I remachined the wheels on my Drummond with no problems. Cylinder block could be machined between centres or on a Keats angle plate.

                                  Will
