"flying with three aircraft on one exercise is quite rare."

          Oh, how things have changed!

Nicosia mid 60s, para drop exercise, mixed Hastings and Bevs. Called downwind and got the reply "Roger, Number 12 to finals call base leg" … and we were not 'tail end charlie' in the stream!

Driving home from Dover earlier this week I was delighted to see a B17 near Duxford. My wife tried to get a picture but it was too difficult with the terrain, the trees and other vehicles. Nice to see though.

We had a Gazelle Helicopter over us on Thursday, a very rare sight now.

Seen lots of Spitfires and Dakotas recently but sitting in the garden this afternoon I heard something different. Heavy, fast and a throaty radial engine. The aircraft flew over at about 1000ft, and he was shifting; hope he was below 250kts. smile Definitely a WWII fighter, with a distinctive curve to the trailing edge of the wing. It came from the direction of Duxford, did a circuit of Bourn airfield and headed back to Duxford. After a bit of digging on the net I'm pretty sure it was a P47 Thunderbolt.

                    Andrew,

There is a P47 that belongs to the company who keep the two seater ME109 and two seater spitfire at Sywell **LINK**

The above company also has a Hawker Fury FB 11 that could pass that discription, it is all silver finish, not the flashy paint job and D day stripes of the P-47. Both machines big, fast and noisey.

According to two company websites there are two FB11's at Duxford, the owners of the P47's FB11 is camoflaged with pale blue undersides, the other companies is silver but they both have clipped wing tips, Andrew has to confirm if he noticed invasion strips if yes its the P47 smiley

Just returned from an enjoyable few hours at Shoreham airfield, near Brighton, we took my grandson there for an introductory flying lesson which we bought for him as a present. He is 20 years old and on the autistic spectrum, we prewarned the flying school of his autism, and they were brilliant, he really seemed to communicate well with his instructor and he took him up along the coast to where we live and circled over my grandsons house so he was able to get a photo of it. The weather was brilliant sunshine and couldn’t have wished for better, he flew in a Cessna 152 so high wing, no problem with the sun beating down into the cockpit and plenty of downward view. He has always wanted to fly and now seems bitten by the bug and wants to carry on and gain his licence. It was a brilliant experience for the grandson and the staff at the flying club really made his day for him.

Dunno, could have been a Sea Fury. The aeroplane was definitely silver and my impression was it was too dumpy to be a Sea Fury. Didn't sound quite right either. The jury is out, but on balance I might stick with a Thunderbolt? I can't say for sure if there were invasion strips.

Martin, we had two Gazelle helicopters privately owned in Royal Navy colours at the museum the other week for the Weston Super Mare air show. I watched as they took off in formation from our field. A year or so ago, a Gazelle was visiting and had an engine fault. They changed the engine the next day, it took an hour.

When I was a kid, on holiday every year at Shoreham, I frequently watched Tiger Moths doing aerobatics over the airfield.

Presumably the same aircraft is over Bar Hill right now I. I concur with your P-47 Thunderbolt identification. eep front fuselage and harvard-esque tail are key. I then googled P47 UK and found this

                                which pretty much confirms it.

I was busy trying to sort out workshop this afternoon and heard a very loud multi cylinder aircraft, ran (hobbled) outside to see the Lancaster going over at approx. 300ft. What a beautifull sight but the engines sounded like buckets of nails. About an hour later a Jet Provost flew over (a lot higher). Second time we have seen the Lanc this year, first time over Rutland Water and it sounded superb that time. Oh well back to sorting out the workshop.

Forgot to report that last Friday I heard rotor blades with a buzz saw sound so looked up to find an Auto Gyro flying over us towards Old Warden, it looked like a Ken Wallis design with little vertical stabilisers in the tailplane.

I spent last weekend at Duclington Vintage show, near Witney and the final approach for Brize Norton, it was also the RIAT at Fairford, and it was heaven, Airbus Voyagers, C17's, C130's, Airbus A400'M's, my first 617 Sqn F35 Lightning, an Osprey, Dornier Do228, several Lear Jets of various size and the highlight was ten Red Arrows Hawks in formation with a BOAC 747.

As soon as I get around to putting the pictures on my computer I will put some up.

Estimated altitude, very low, between 100 and 150 feet. Speed 'lots'.
