Adjusting the gibs on a wm18

Hello All..

could anyone offer me any advice on adjusting the gib strips on my Wm18

What do you need to know?

They are tapered gibs held between two adjustment screws.

Be aware that the threaded part is quite small compared too the head, so don't use too much force.

If the gib is stuck try loosening the screw in the big end and move the table in that direction.

just unsure how to adjust, would I best to remove and clean then refit and adjust.

otherwise I guess you wind the gib strip along until no play in the table can be felt.

The other reason I wanted to tighten things up is that the winding handle feels very loose, so much so that in certain positions the handle will drop moving the table slightly, not sure if I can adjust the leadscrew nut just to tighten things a little, all part of the charm of these machines maybe..

Hi

I took mine apart to clean out the shipping grease but there wasn't much of it IIRC.

There are thrust bearings on the lead screws. Tightening the nut on the hand wheel a little will stop it turning on it's own.

If you put some drag on the gibs with the table locks you can test the feel of a tighter gib.
