      Hi all and Season’s Greetings,

I’m working my way through my late Father’s extensive and eclectic collection of tools…no doubt collected by him over the years, by also by his father & grandfather (who was a wheelwright) over the years.

Anyway, among the general assortment of bits and pieces, I’ve come across a large Junior Hacksaw, specifically one taking a 9″ blade, rather than the commonly available 6″ variety.

Has anyone come across such a tool before? Where might I get some suitable blades? All I seem to be able to find are 6″ blades or 12″ bladed for a full-size hacksaw.

Thanks and a Happy New Year

      Cheers

      Paul

Before the junior hacksaw made an appearance, Normal hacksaw blades came in several lengths. You still find hacksaw frames that are adjustable Does your saw cater for holes in the end of the blade or pins as the junior ?

Hi Paul, I cannot help a lot inasmuch as I have never come across 'long' junior hacksaw blades. Others might find a direct source for you. I do have some shorter blades to suit the larger hacksaws and use these in my adjustable frame hacksaw.

I cannot help feeling that there will be a lot of 'bow' in a 9 inch junior blade if using it on metal so suspect it might have been reserved for use on softer materials which require less cutting pressure.

The thought crosses my mind that the metalwork bandsaw blade used for Back and Decker type bandsaws is very similar to the junior hacksaw blade (less wave along the teeth however) and could doubtless be cut to lengths and drilled / punched / pins inserted if you temper each end of the cut lengths.

              Thank you both.

Yes (Roy) the saw accepts pinned blades – it’s basically a scaled up 6″ saw.

John, interesting thought. I shall look into it.

              Many Thanks

Are you sure it's not a Coping-Saw blade, maybe not just went out to the workshop , and that is 7" long. Wood workers used a thing called a Bow-Saw tensioned with a bit of string across the top Spanish windlass style, thes saw came in a number of sizes.

If I could work out how to post pictures, I'd add a couple of photos.

It's basically a normal junior hacksaw…simple bent steel rod with slots to hook the blade pins over…just scaled up to have a 9" mouth.

edit – seems I can only add pictrures from my PC – not from my phone (where the pictures are!! no matter )…

anyway…this is what I'm talking about:

I had one, probably thiry or forty years ago, but I expect it went a long time ago. I can’t remember whether there were any spare blades with it but I never bought any – I had too many 6” blades to worry about sourcing odd-balls!

IIRC, my brother passed it on, to me – probably because he couldn’t get blades.smiley

Lol!!! TBH, its not a big deal…

I'm trying to restore & pro-actively use as many as possible of my assorted & ancient forefathers' tools as possible – if there is the odd one that plays hardball, so be it.

I will at least clean it up & keep it oiled, incase I do find some suitable blades..

                        Happy new year

Just had a blinding flash of inspiration!!!

What about other things than Junior hacksaw blades that might fit this frame? – like Abrafiles!

Look at this (ended) listing on eBay:

                          https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Abrafile-End-Clips-9-Blades-/202523976174

Abrafiles are 9" long and need special clips to fit a 10" hacksaw frame!

The things some companies do to keep business to themselves.

Hi Paul, I have never known anything but 6" junior hacksaw blades myself, but like Nick Clarke 3 have been thinking that it maybe for Abrafiles (AKA as tension files)
