While searching for other chucks I found a pic of the back of the chuck I was originally going to buy. Same register & PCD as my chuck mandrel so all perfect apart from the 4 bl**dy holes!ch160r.jpg

Arckivio, have a look at this link for information on the D1–3 spindle that's used on the Emco super 11 lathe, if yours is the same spindle it will be useful **LINK**

I had a look at the D1-3 earlier & for a 160mm chuck I think the recess is 125 & the PCD is 140 so 5mm out. I'm going to go with front mount 4 jaw chuck & make a backplate to suit but thanks for the link. Never seen a magnetic chuck on a lathe as he shows in the pics!

            Hi Arckivio,

When I installed a smaller 4-jaw independent chuck on my small lathe I already had a backplate with the correct register diameter, but with 3 mounting holes. So I simply put a mounting bolt in one in one of the holes in the backplate and used one of the 4 holes in the 4-jaw, then I could use the backplate as a drilling jig to mark the position of two new holes at the back of the chuck and drill and tap those two holes. Saved me some work and time, I agree 4 bolts would have been better but a couple of the holes would have interfered with the bolts that mount the backplate to the lathe mandrel. It has worked well for several years.

I finally made my own backplate for a 4 jaw chuck. Used cast iron & went OK once I realised I was turning it at the nearly twice the correct speed! Came out really accurate & my lathe performed brilliantly. Thanks for all the advice everyone

Do the lathe makers not supply a 4 jaw chuck with the machine, or even as an extra?

Also, what happens when you need a faceplate ?

They do a 4 jaw chuck but I never ordered and I've actually been looking for a faceplate but can't seem to find one with the same pcs as a standard 3 jaw chuck. A 3 jaw 160mm chuck like the one supplied has a 145mm PCD
